The new head coach will be in the dugout for the first time as Gers travel to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership, and despite the quick turnaround, Ferguson says the players understand what he wants to see.
Sitting down with the media at this afternoon’s pre-match press conference, he said: “I have only had one training session, but I am not going to use that as an excuse in terms of the game tomorrow night against Kilmarnock.
“We came in last night about 4.30pm with the staff and we sat down for about four or five hours and had a lot of things to go through to be ready and prepared for the boys coming in this morning.
“I have not filled them with too much information because it is too short notice, but they totally understand what we are going to do against a very good Kilmarnock team and against a very good, experienced manager.
"I had a brief meeting with the squad today and they fully understand my expectations.
“I have been brought in to start winning games of football as quickly as possible and that needs to start tomorrow night at Rugby Park.”
When asked how ready he is for the challenge, Ferguson continued: “I was enjoying my new role as a club ambassador but when I got offered this opportunity there was no way I was turning it down.
“I am glad I have taken it, and we will see where it goes. I am confident in my staff’s ability, and also the players. I am here until the end of the season, but my main objective is to start winning games on a consistent basis, it is one game at a time and that is what I am fully focused on.”
Ferguson was asked about the confidence of the team and says he has already seen a reaction at training.
He continued: “I have been at games recently, I could see clearly that it is a group of players that are low on confidence but my job is to try and pick that up a bit and I certainly got a response.
“I know with football some players need an arm around about them, some maybe need a wee clip round about the ear, I'll suss out who needs that. What I will say is the response I got today was the response I wanted driving in this morning.
“Even before we went out on the grass, it was bubbly, it was noisy, that is what we want to hear and when it is like that it tells me that a group of players are enjoying their training session.
"The last couple of results certainly against Queen's Park and St Mirren have been tough but you need to show a bit of character about yourself and that is what my team will show tomorrow.
“We are going to a place where they totally know what they are going to be going into. We are coming up against an experienced manager who I have a lot of respect for and he has got a real good team as well, they have got a physical side to them, but they have also got players who can hurt you so we are briefed on that, we are ready for that and I just can't wait for tomorrow night to get going.”
