BRIANNA WESTRUP says it will be a ‘huge honour’ to captain Rangers as the squad prepare for the start of the 2021/22 Scottish Women’s Premier League this weekend.
The centre-back will lead Malky Thomson’s side this season following the retirement of Clare Gemmell at the end of the last campaign.
Westrup has already captained Rangers on several occasions since joining the club in October 2020 but says it is a big moment for her personally.
Speaking to RangersTV, she said: “It is a huge honour, I am so proud and lucky to be able to lead the girls out.
“I love this team so much so it is a huge moment for me and hopefully I can do it to the best of my ability and lead the team in the best way that I can.
“That being said, there are so many leaders on the pitch and it is not a one person job, every single person brings something to the table.
“It always helps when you have people around you who know what they are doing and experienced players.”
Westrup was at Hampden this morning as the Scottish Women’s Premier League season was launched ahead of Sunday’s opening match against Partick Thistle.

She added: “It feels like a long time coming, we have had quite a long pre-season and I think the girls are excited to get the league started and working towards our goals.
“There's a good mood around the camp, we obviously all get on very well so now it is just a matter of stringing performances together and getting more and more comfortable with each other each day.”
