CAMMY Devlin says it was ‘super special’ to make his Rangers debut this evening in a friendly against AS Saint-Étienne at Ibrox.
The midfielder came off the bench at half-time and made an impact in the second period as Derek McInnes’ side won 2-1.
Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, he said: “I loved it, it was super special coming here today for my first game as a Rangers player. I absolutely loved every minute of it, and most importantly it was good to get a win.
“We are a week out from the season now, so we are getting closer. It is a really good group of boys here, so I am really excited to be here, and to get my first game in front of the fans was great, and I loved it.
“I just tried to do my best. They were a good team; they played some really good football, and the gaffer made a little change at half-time, taking Fin off. It had nothing to do with how Fin played. I thought he was really good; we just needed more numbers in midfield. That change really helped, but I thought everyone played really well. I'm happy to play my part and loved being out there with the boys.”
Devlin believes there’s still so much more to come from the group as they continue to build their relationships on the pitch. He added: “Training is one thing; in pre-season you are working super hard, training really hard and playing under fatigue. Playing games is the most important thing; that's how you build relationships with players you haven't played with before and try to make that as good as you can going into the season.
“These things obviously take time, especially when there's a new manager, but I thought there were moments today where boys that haven't played together were connecting really well. I think the second goal that we got was a penalty, but the play to get there was really good; it's a little of what we can do. I think we can play a lot better, but to win is the most important thing and those things will come.”
Having worked with Derek McInnes at Hearts, Devin hopes he can repay the faith the manager has shown in him by performing at Rangers. He continued: “He has been brilliant with me since I had him at Hearts; he was good for me, he really brought out the best in me and brought another level to my game.
“Fortunately enough for me, he has been a big part in bringing me over to Rangers, and it is something I am so grateful for, so I have got to repay the faith he has had in me.
“I just want to try and put in the best performances as I can, work as hard as I can to be the best Rangers player I can possibly be and help get the best out of other boys as well.
“He has been great for me, and I think I need to give back to everyone that has had faith in bringing me here, and hopefully I can do that.”
