The Light Blues take on their rivals for the final time in 2022/23 in front of their home supporters tomorrow afternoon as they go in search of all three points.
Speaking to the media in this afternoon’s press conference ahead of the game the midfielder believes it is important to reward the fans for their support this season with a good performance and result.
He said: “It is so important tomorrow for the fans more than anything, they have stuck with us, it has been a disappointing campaign and they do deserve better, for me it is an opportunity tomorrow for them all to be there and to hopefully see a good performance and hopefully a win.
“It is an important game as is every game for us, it is an opportunity to give something back to the fans for obviously a disappointing season, it is a big opportunity for us.”
Cantwell believes having a full home support will be an advantage in the fixture as they look for a strong end to the campaign with the four games that remain.
He continued: “The fans in these games are what make them, we went there and we didn't have any fans and they are obviously having the same, fans make this fixture as long as everyone is well behaved, it is a game that everyone around the world looks at and thinks what a fantastic football match.”
The 25-year-old says it always an enjoyable game to be a part of it having admired it from a far previously and featuring in the last three clashes between the sides since his arrival to the club in January.
He added: “It is an enjoyable game, you grew up as a kid going through the academy systems to play in games where it means a lot, if you don't enjoy those games then there is really no point in going forward with it in the first place.
“They are always on TV, Sky cover the games and there is always a big build-up, you would have to be living under a rock to know that there wasn't one happening, they are big games globally but obviously they are massive when you are playing in one of them.”
Having featured for his new club 16 times since joining the former Norwich City man feels he is now getting back to his best physically having enjoyed a consistent run of matches in the second half of the season.
He said: “I think it has been difficult, it has been a very unique situation for me where I had a good spell where I wasn't playing football consistently. If I am being completely honest I probably didn't realise how much I had missed it but also how much I need to be playing at my best level.
“The more games and fitness you can get in you get to a certain point where you are just ready to play, I feel like I am getting there now.”
