Clement: A Well Deserved Victory

PHILIPPE CLEMENT believes it was a ‘well-deserved’ victory for his side as they defeated St Johnstone 1-0 in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon.

Despite the only goal of the game being an own goal from Jason Holt, Rangers dominated in Perth and the manager was pleased with what he saw from the squad.

Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, he said: “It was a well-deserved victory with domination the whole game from our side and we didn’t give away a lot at all. The only thing we missed today was to score the second and third goal or more.

“We had opportunities because we did good things, and the St Johnstone goalkeeper also played a really good game, but we still need to become better in the final third, and in decision making to make the right runs.

“We showed images at half-time where to find the right spaces because in the first 20 minutes it was not good enough in that way, but it became better and better. The substitutes coming in had to do the right job for the team, which is what they are all doing.

“The team spirit, the team mentality of putting the egos aside is good, whether the players are starting or not starting.”

The manager believes it was important to ‘stand-up’ following Thursday’s 4-1 UEFA Europa League victory in Nice to take the points in Perth today.

He continued: “I put that challenge really in the dressing room. After a European game and a good victory, we needed to stand up three days later and get the points here. We had to play good football and play the football we want to see, and they did that, it is now about creating this culture with the group.

“We have to do that every three days because that is what Rangers is about, that is what I want and what I demand. I see more and more players understanding that philosophy and being ready for that. Physically our data is getting better and better also with the players to physically cope with that, so it is going to be a very interesting two months now with a lot of goals.

“We will need rotation in the squad, but everybody who works hard will get chances if they show quality.”
