The Gers were at their rampant best at Ibrox as James Penrice and Vanja Dragojevic scored their first goals for the club, the former on his debut, alongside strikes from Ryan Naderi, Djeidi Gassama and Ross McCausland.
It was a first competitive victory for McInnes in charge, but he insists his team must take the confidence from today’s display into the remainder of the campaign.
Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, the manager commented: “I’m pleased for my players, but I’m also pleased for the supporters. They’ve been desperate to get behind something.
“It’s been a tough start, and there’s no getting away from it.
“We’re all working hard to get a team on the pitch they can get behind, and I thought there were signs of that today.
“For the supporters to turn up today, having seen the team in the last few weeks struggle to get any sort of real level of performance, I thought it was a better 90-minute performance or as close to that.
“It’s only a start, and hopefully we can build on that on Thursday with another strong win.
“Getting confidence into players isn’t always easy, and the best ingredient for confidence is having a winning dressing room, and that’s what we need to work towards more often.”
Rangers began with a spring in their step despite recent results, with Dragojevic’s strike the pick of the bunch to double his side’s advantage after Naderi’s opener.
McInnes continued: “We scored two goals and could have had a couple more.
“I’m disappointed with the goal we lost. It’s a mistake, and that can happen, but the quality of the finish was terrific.
“We’re up against a team who came here with a lot of confidence, and we had to try and knock that out of them, and at the same time try to work hard for our confidence in the game.
“I thought our play was terrific in the main, up to when we lost the goal, and you see the fragility of the team again.
“Everything then seemed to be harder than it needed to be.
“Half-time came at a good time for us to address that, and we spoke about trying to get a strong start in the second half and get the tie won early doors.”
Rangers duly did as much, with McInnes crediting the half-time introduction of Findlay Curtis for injecting fresh energy levels.
Penrice added to Gassama’s strike, while Ivor Pandur enjoyed a terrific individual moment down the opposite end when he denied Killian Phillips from the penalty spot.
McInnes added: “Findlay’s introduction for Daisuke [Yokota] was also a big emphasis on the game in terms of keeping that energy.
“The biggest concern for me in the second half was the energy; we’ve played two tough games since St. Mirren last played.
“We tried to make subs at the right time, and the energy in the team was good.
"To score five goals at home, you need to be pleased, but I do think we should’ve scored a lot more.
“I’m annoyed a wee bit that we gave up two or three chances that we shouldn’t, and these are the sort of things we could be punished for on another day.”
