It was a narrow 3-2 defeat for the Gers against the Portuguese champions at Ibrox with all to play for in next week’s second-leg.
Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, Docherty said: “It was a really difficult 90 minutes for us as a squad. I think it was a level up in opposition, Benfica have made the group stages a number of times in this competition but I think we held our own.
“We competed and we managed to score goals against them as well so it was a positive performance all round. I think everyone worked their socks off and I'm really proud of every player on that pitch and the players that came on as well and we are still in the tie.
“Everyone handled their own, we showed that determination to get the ball back. We can look at ourselves in terms of when we do win the ball back, can we keep it and bring a calmness to our play but you can't write anyone off.
“I thought everyone was outstanding tonight defensively and put their bodies on the line so we are still in the tie and it is a really positive performance all round.”
The 30-year-old was delighted to be playing at Ibrox and was grateful of the support from the fans.
She continued: “Bringing Champions League football back to Ibrox as a women's team is something that I had never imagined would happen so for us to go and do that tonight was an unbelievable memory.
“It has history made again for the women's team and as I said I am really proud of every player and the fans who came and turned out tonight were outstanding and all the singing and bringing us up so I am really thankful for everyone that turned up tonight.”
Looking ahead to Motherwell on Sunday, Docherty said it is important focus now turns back to the SWPL.
She added: “We are really excited for next week in Portugal but we need to focus on the next game and that is Motherwell for us so we will be fully-focused on Motherwell first.
“When that game is over we will turn our focus towards Champions League football again but we can take a lot of positives tonight. We can also look at things we can work on as well to hurt them again so we are really looking forward to the game next week.
“Motherwell caused us problems last season so we know it is not going to be an easy game and we need to be at our very best if we want to get a result on Sunday and that is something we will be looking to do to get three points.”
