Dundee 0-3 Rangers

RELENTLESS Rangers maintained their stranglehold of top spot in the SPL with an excellent display which was as pure and bright as their natty new white strips.

And it is a real sign of the times that almost a year ago Rangers fell 12 points behind Celtic in the title race at the same venue and now lead the league by four points, albeit for a short period perhaps.

Bob Malcolm was perhaps an unlikely first scorer, but goals from Peter Lovenkrands and Moore made Rangers easy victors against a Dundee side who played the whole of the second half with 10 men after Zurab Khizanishvili was dismissed for a last-man challenge.

The renaissance of Mols continued in the city of Discovery proving that last week’s goal-scoring return to the action against Kilmarnock was no flash in the pan.

There is a new belief in the Dutch striker but the old magic is still there. The trademark twists and turns were back, the awareness was back and if he can maintain this form Shota Arveladze may have a very difficult job getting back into the side.

There was pace and presence about his play as he again linked superbly with Ronald de Boer and the midfield players – especially fellow countryman Fernando Ricksen – prompting applause from manager Alex McLeish on more than one occasion.

Mols was involved in the opening goal and played a key role in another key incident – the dismissal of Dundee central defender Zurab Khizanishvili for a last-man challenge on de Boer in the final moments of the first half.

In fairness to Dundee they squandered two quite excellent opportunities in the opening 45 minutes – the first one coming in just two minutes.

Rangers were caught cold by Fabian Caballero’s through ball which released Nacho Novo, who had darted ahead of Craig Moore. Novo then dance past Stefan Klos who had sprinted from his line and seemed certain to score but Moore got back to make a vital block.

The Ibrox men were nearly caught again in 20 minutes when Georgi Nemsadze played a quick free kick down the left for Garry Brady and the midfielder picked out Caballero in the box and the Argentinian tried a cute back heel which struck the outside of the right hand post.

Rangers had created some chances of their own by that time and Peter Lovenkrands should have down better when he played a one-two with the excellent Arthur Numan in 11 minutes but made a bad touch and Julian Speroni was able to collect.

It was the only easy save the Argentinian keeper had to make as Rangers forced him to make as string of blocks during a contest they largely dominated.

He denied Lovenkrands in 15 minutes after Numan had again played in the young Dane but his save to prevent Mols in 28 minutes was even better.

Arteta swept the ball wide for Kevin Muscat, whose low cross was touched on by de Boer and Mols drove a right foot shot which Speroni brilliantly pushed wide for a corner. There was little the Dundee keeper could do, however, when Rangers took the lead in 30 minutes.

Lovenkrands won a corner on the left and Arteta took it, swinging the ball to the front post where Moore rose to power a header which crashed off the crossbar. Mols was quickest to react but his shot was blocked then Bob Malcolm popped in the rebound with his left foot for only his second goal for the club.

Mols was denied again in 33 minutes when he took a pass from Ricksen and brilliantly turned away from Jonay Hernandez before drilling a left foot shot which Speroni pushed wide.

Rangers looked increasingly dangerous and Lovenkrands should have put them two up in 35 minutes after Arteta rolled the ball into his path on the left side of the box but he lifted his shot over the bar.

He made amends five minutes into the second half when he scored his third goal in four games to make sure Rangers were going to collect all three points and this time he converted Arteta’s assist.

The young Spaniard produced a great cross from the bye line and Lovenkrands had the simplest of chances to direct a header into the Dundee net.

By this stage the Dark Blues were down to 10 men following Khizanisvili’s red card just before the break and there was no way they were going to come back from that.

The decision was clear cut. Ricksen capitalised on Hernandez’s hesitancy to play the ball forward for Mols and quick as a flash the Rangers striker sent de Boer racing in on goal. He was just about to shoot when the Georgian brought him down and he had to go.

De Boer retuend the compliment to Mols when he set up his fellow countryman in 57 minutes and the Rangers fans behind the goal willed him to score but he shot over the bar, trying to place the ball into the top right corner.

There was a blow for Rangers in 68 minutes when Numan had to go off with an ankle injury while Barry Ferguson was also taken off in 73 minutes after aggravating his constant hop problem but McLeish’s men were not finished.

Moore had been presented with three chances with headers from corners and failed to capitalise on any of them. He made no mistake, however, in 79 minutes.

Arteta’s corner from the right was just pefect and Oz powered a header into the Dundee and then celebrated in style in front of the travelling fans.

It was a highly satisfactory finish to a highly satisfactory day’s work from Rangers,
