However, he finally hit the century today with a terrific strike inside the first 100 seconds and he joins illustrious company.
Only Ally McCoist, Derek Johnstone, Ralph Brand, Billy Simpson and Willie Thornton had managed 100 Rangers league goals since the War.
Now Boyd, who broke the overall SPL record back in December, has made a little piece of history by joining these great names.
Nacho Novo got the other Rangers goal – and a good one it was too – as Walter Smith rested a number of regulars with Tuesday’s Old Firm game in mind.
It’s another huge milestone for the Boyd who has been a scoring sensation since joining from Kilmarnock in January 2006.
It was John Fleck who set him up when he cleverly robbed Keith Watson of possession, burst forward and then adeptly laid the ball into Boyd’s path.
The striker barely needed to look up before slotting a right foot shot into the right corner.
It was an electric start and despite having seven changes in the side Rangers were by far the better team in the first half and might have scored more than two goals with Nacho Novo scoring a terrific goal just before half-time.
Only desperate defending by Gary Kenneth stopped Fleck from scoring with a left foot shot in 12 minutes then the teenager was involved in a great move in 26 minutes when Boyd laid the ball off Fleck found Novo but he shot over the top.
The Spaniard brilliantly played in Boyd in 35 minutes and the striker seemed certain to score again but Kenneth just got his foot in the way of his shot and it took the sting out his effort allowing Dusan Pernis to save.
However, with four minutes to go in the first half Novo struck a great second goal. He made it himself but skipping away from Kenneth before slotting a right foot shot past Pernis.
The only down side for Rangers was yet another injury to Kevin Thomson who took a heavy knock on the head after being challenged by Kenneth and he had to be replaced by DaMarcus Beasley.
United just seemed to be second best in that first half and there was little change in the second.
The Tangerines seemed to struggle to make an impact against the make shift Rangers defence.
Indeed it was Rangers who looked the more dangerous and Novo came close to a second goal of the game in 71 minutes.
A Beasley corner was cleared as far as Davie Weir who hooked it back into the box. Hill got it away but only as far as Novo who tried to beat Pernis with a volley but his effort flew just wide.
There was, of course, little to play for as Rangers has been crowned champions and United had already secured third place but it was still a decent contest.
And United make the last 10 minutes interesting when they pulled a goal back.
They won a corner on the left hand side. Ryan Dow whipped the ball over and Casalinuovo headed the ball down and past Neil Alexander.
In the end it was too little to late and Rangers were worthy winners thanks to Boyd and Novo.
