The Light Blues were beaten 3-0 in this afternoon’s third place play-off against Atletico Madrid as their European qualifying campaign came to an end for another campaign following a midweek defeat to Arsenal.
Speaking to RangersTV after the match at Meadow Park, the former Lioness says the team have to take the positives from the test’s they’ve faced this week as they prepare for their league campaign to resume next weekend, she commented: “It has to help us, it showed that we took on board what happened against Arsenal on Wednesday.
“To come out and produce a performance without the result is important for us.
“Because if we are not doing one we have got to get the other, but it is really important that we take this into our league campaign because this level of opposition is just another level.
“We have got to recognise that; we have shown that we can compete against a really strong Atletico team.
“We don't very often get dominated possession wise so they are the positives that we have got to take from it but we have also got to remember this.
“Not just in the next couple of months we have got to remember it at the back end of the season as well.
“It is important that we take these learnings and remember how it felt in these games, because these are the big games and we have got to remember that come the back end of the season.
“It will be important for us and I think it will be important for us in the long run but it just makes you hungry to want to get here again and have a real good shot at it and produce performances and results that better this.”
“It definitely won't derail us, that doesn't even come into question.
“We are good I think you seen the response that we had from Wednesdayinto this game so that was positive as well.
“We have got something positive to build on the back of this as well.
“We have got a good week now to get back in and prepare for our league campaign again and that just makes us even more hungry to go and try win the league this time.”
Potter was frustrated that her side couldn’t capitalise on a better performance than their midweek showing, highlighting the fine margins in the game as they fell to defeat to the side that finished third in the Spanish top-flight last season.
She added: “We are probably a bit more disappointed than we were the other night really.
“I thought we were really in complete control for large parts of the game.
“The reaction for the players to come out and completely change their performance style, to come from defending out of possession the other day to come and be an in possession team.
“Beating presses, playing through lines, taking the ball in tight areas, making good decisions. It is just fine margins and little one per cents at the end of the day that has let us down because you look at it as a whole performance and we are probably pleased with it, but it is 3-0 so we are not pleased with it.
“The result really dampens the mood really because I think there was an opportunity there for us to go and get some goals and win this game and we ultimately didn't."
