Rangers and Hearts have contested league fixtures in 119 seasons since being founding member clubs of the Scottish League, playing their first league fixture at the First Ibrox Park in August 1890. The Light Blues have hosted Hearts on 160 occasions to date, with a record of 109 wins, 28 draws and 23 defeats along the way. In the process, Gers have scored 335 goals and conceded 156.
Danilo’s winning goal in the last meeting between the sides at Ibrox, three minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game, was not only notable for securing a valuable three points on the day, it was also the 600th league goal scored by Rangers in matches against Hearts. Willie Reid scored Rangers’ 100th league goal in the fixture in Feb 1915 with other milestones following from Willie Findlay (200 in Jan 1952), Martin Henderson (300 in Jan 1976), David Hagen (400 in Aug 1993) and Kris Boyd (500 in Aug 2006)
A Rangers goal today will set a new club record in the fixture, breaking a record that has stood since November 1904, the last time that the Light Blues had scored against Hearts in 20 consecutive league fixtures. The current 20-game run started in October 2017 with a 3-1 victory at Murrayfield, with 49 goals scored during the period, shared between 28 different players. Alfredo Morelos, with ten goals, is the top marksman over the 20-game run, followed by Ryan Kent on four goals and Scott Arfield with three.
Connor Goldson is the only player in the current squad to have scored more than one league goal against Hearts, his two goals coming in back-to-back games in December 2018, a 2-1 win at Tynecastle, and April 2019, a 3-0 victory at Ibrox. Eight other players currently with the club - Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Alex Lowry, Cole McKinnon, Todd Cantwell, James Tavernier, Danilo and Abdallah Sima - all have one league goal in the fixture. In addition, Ryan Jack and Scott Wright also scored against Hearts in the 2022 Scottish Cup final with Wright also adding a League Cup goal in this season’s semi-final alongside a James Tavernier double.
