Jay Hogarth, Leon King, Alex Lowry, Adam Devine and Cole McKinnon will be joining the young Dark Blues at the end of month as they play two games against Morton and St Mirren.
All the youngsters currently play in Rangers B team in the Scottish Lowland League, emphasising the important role the Lowland League and B Team project plays in developing some of Scotland’s brightest talent.
The five boys selected for the under-19s follows the recent announcements that in the upcoming international break, Rangers Academy will have five players with the Scotland under-21s, two players with Northern Ireland 21’s, three players with Northern Ireland under-19s, four players with Scotland 17s and four players at the recent Scotland under-16 matches.
A number of the boys with Scotland under-19’s sat down to speak exclusively to RangersTV after receiving the news of their call-ups.
B Team defender, Leon King, expressed his excitement upon receiving the news of his selection and highlighted how competing in the Lowland League has put the boys in a strong position and frame of mind ahead of the camp.
He said: “It’s always good to get the call ups to the national team. I’ve not been there in a while so it will be good to get back there.
“It’s helped a lot [competing in the Lowland League], being able to play against bigger and stronger players. When you get to international level you’re obviously up against more experienced, high-level players, so it is good to get the challenge in club football as well.”
Fellow Light Blue, Cole McKinnon, added his delight to be called up to the training camp at the end of the month and to be among a number of fellow Rangers Academy players to be selected for international duty over the years.
He continued: “I was delighted with receiving the news, especially as I have missed a lot of Scotland games due to my injuries so it’s good to get a chance to get to camp and prove that I am good enough to become a part of the squad.
“I think myself and the other B Team boys can take our experience playing men [in the Lowland League] and take that to the Scotland camp and we can kick on from that.
“We’re all chasing after the same goals so as long as we just stick together, we should be fine.”
Alex Lowry expressed how happy and excited he was to be reunited with the Scotland squad after the lockdown period and outlined his personal aims he wants to achieve whilst at the camp.
He said: “I’m delighted to be back amongst the squad, it’s been quite a while due to Covid, so it’ll be good to be back in with them. “My aim is always to be playing well here but to also try and catch the eye of the national squad, it’s always a delight to get picked.”
Rangers B keeper, Jay Hogarth, was also among the B team boys selected for the training camp, and he followed up by saying: “It was really good. I’ve had a few international call-ups, but it is always an honour to go with the squad.
“If you’re playing well for Rangers and are doing everything right then you give yourself a good chance of getting called up for the international team.”
B Team assistant coach, Brian Gilmour, underlined his excitement for the selected boys and how he thinks their progression in the Lowland League will benefit them on international duty.
He added: “It’s fantastic news that the five boys have been selected for the U19’s training camp.
“For the players to take what they have learned from competing in the Lowland League into international duty will benefit them in that challenge, and likewise what they will learn there bring back to this campaign.”
