Allan McGregor, 38, returned to the starting eleven last night and helped his side record an eighth clean sheet on the bounce as the Light Blues ran out 5-0 winners against Lincoln Red Imps in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
McGregor also featured in the club's first competitive match of the campaign - a 1-0 away victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie on August 1 - but an injury meant summer signing Jon McLaughlin took his place and the 33-year-old didn't look back, making six appearances on the bounce and not conceding a goal.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Premiership match against Hibs at Easter Road, Gerrard was asked how he will decide who features between the posts with so many big games coming up.
"I think I'll decide at the time, from game to game,” he said. “What I will say is I have two fantastic keepers who are going to push each other really hard. I can see that in training; it is competitive, they get on really well and they have got big respect for each other.
"I didn't predict or envisage that it would have gone the way it has. With all due to respect the plan and the idea was that if Allan had a strong pre-season I was going to start with Allan as the number one. I think he would have deserved that on the last two years and his form.
"Unfortunately, he has had a couple of knee niggles or injuries that have set him back and Jon certainly took his chance.
"If it did work out as it would have worked out I would have played Jon McLaughlin last night to give him a game, because I think you don't want your keepers going too long without a game and unfortunately we are not in a position where we can play games behind closed doors because of the testing and stuff.
"So I do have to try and be, I wouldn't say clever is the right word, but I do have to think about trying to keep them both as fresh as I can but also sharp with the right amount of minutes."
The manager is looking forward to seeing his team return to Premiership action against an in-form Hibs team in the capital this weekend, but he didn't want to say if this will be the toughest away trip for his squad so far in 2020/21.
He added: "I wouldn't want to disrespect Aberdeen by saying that. I think going to Pittodrie on the first game of the season, on the back of a different pre-season, was a very big challenge as well.
"We're playing against a good Hibs team that are in form, so you treat this game in isolation.
"We are going there with respect, but certainly with confidence that we can go and do the job."
