Gerrard: Looking For Marginal Gains

RANGERS will look to give themselves a ‘marginal gain’ by getting the job done against Standard Liege tomorrow night to put them in the Europa League knockout stages.

That’s according to boss Steven Gerrard who is well-aware of what is at stake for both teams – and with a win absolutely crucial for the visitors, Gerrard will hope to use that to his side’s advantage.

He told today’s press conference: "That is the idea and the plan that we are looking to achieve. I think any little, small, marginal gains you can give yourself and the group, you have always got to try and achieve them.

"It will be a difficult game tomorrow but we are at home and we are in a good place with confidence and belief really high at the moment.

"We are on an unbeaten run we want to try and protect and continue, and we know that Standard have got to come here and try to win the game.

"So we have to be aware of that and that will certainly try and play some part in our game plan knowing they are in a more desperate situation than us.

"So it is a very interesting game and one we are all looking forward to."

A win tomorrow will guarantee progression, and following that with victory next week in Poznan will see the Light Blues top the group.

The manager continued: "We want to try and do both is the answer. I know people will probably think if we were to get the result we want tomorrow that next week becomes irrelevant - that's not the case.

"We want to try and keep winning games of football and we want to keep the unbeaten run going and we want to approach every game the same with the mentality and the attitude to try and win.

"Next week is too far ahead as we have something right under our noses which we need to give full focus to tomorrow and we need to commit to this game and if we do, I'm sure we can get the result we want.

"Then it is basically turning our attention to Ross County, so for us, the games in the future are a million miles away.

"The only one which is really important is the one that is right in front of us."
