If selected against Standard Liege tomorrow night, McGregor will move on to 83 – one ahead of current record holder Barry Ferguson.
Gerrard is proud of his man, and told today’s press conference: "I think he is certainly up there alongside the best I have played with in-terms of how he goes about his business on a daily basis.
"His standards are top and it certainly helps my job when there are people in the dressing room that help relay those messages and basically set the standards themselves.
"I am really pleased for him and we are all proud of him here. He has never, ever let us down so he is someone we are extremely happy with and I think to take the record off someone like Barry Ferguson who has an incredible legacy here at the club, I think this should be a proud day for both.
"I am sure Allan will be very grateful to take the baton from Barry, but I am sure Barry would be very proud as well as they played together and they are two fantastic servants for the club."

The manager was quizzed on how he expects Liege to line-up tomorrow evening, and he explained: "The majority of games we have covered, they have played a back five so if I was pushed to make a decision, I expect them to play a back five again.
"Having said that, we have seen them play with a back four and we also know [Merveille] Bokadi who plays in the middle of the back three likes to step into midfield and it almost becomes a four when he gets a bit adventurous.
"So we know a lot about this team and what they do in-terms of systems and formations - they played a back five against Anderlecht at the weekend, and on the odd occasion, Bokadi steps in and becomes the extra midfielder alongside [Gojko] Cimirot.
"Cimirot is not in the traveling party so it is a case of waiting to see what team they decide in-terms of the XI and in-terms of personnel, but if I was a betting man - which I'm not - I assume they are going to go for a back five again."
He also gave an update on his squad ahead of the match, adding: "Ryan Jack is a major doubt - I think we're going to run out of time with Ryan unless there is a miraculous turnaround in the next 24 hours, but he still has a good chance for the weekend.
"He is close, but we might run out of time.
"Joe Aribo will hopefully be back with us - he trained yesterday and he is going to train today so assuming he comes through today's session, Joe should be back in the squad.
"Brandon Barker, we will try his little knock out today - he had a little knock on his ankle and a bit of a twist on the astro-turf, so he will try to train this morning so hopefully he will pull through and be available as well."
