On 51 minutes the Colombian forward made it 3-1 against Benfica’s ten men when he fired the ball into the roof of the next from close range after great build-up play from James Tavernier.
El Bufalo slid to his knees to celebrate a special moment in his career and, despite a late comeback from the home side which saw the game end 3-3, his manager was delighted for a player he believes is in a good place right now.
Gerrard said: "He was very happy after the game in terms of his record breaking. I think he wants to build on that and I think the hunger is there. You can see it in his eyes that he wants to go and score more goals in the competition.
“In terms of comparing him to old, I don’t really like doing that because it's about the now. It's about what he offers moving forward. But he's definitely in a better place in terms of his form and how he looks.
“He's smiling and he seems happy, so that is fantastic for everyone connected with Rangers."
Another top performer for the Light Blues this season is Northern Ireland midfielder and captain Steven Davis.
Gerrard, speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premiership game against Hamilton, has been hugely impressed with the 35-year-old’s displays and his desire to maintain his high standards at club and international levels.
The manager added: “Steven is in good form and I think he has been since we returned from lockdown.
"You always wonder when players of that age, after they have such a long break off with a lockdown, what are they going to be like when they return.
“But with his professionalism and his attitude and his application, he came back in unbelievable shape and he's built on that. I think that's shown in his performances.
“He is really, really consistent at the moment and arguably in the best form since we've been working together."
Rangers were today celebrating another awards double this morning with Gerrard and Goldson claiming the SPFL Manager and Player of the Month prizes for October It’s the second time this season already Gerrard has claimed the prize, while its the third month out of three a Ranger has won the players’ gong.
October was a fabulous month for Gers, winning their three Scottish Premiership matches and their three Europa League ties, conceding just one goal in the process.
Indeed, Goldson contributed massively at the other end too, with his double securing a superb 2-0 Old Firm victory at Parkhead.
Gers will be looking to continue their outstanding form when Hamilton visit Ibrox on Sunday.
