Gers Suffer SWPL Defeat From Late Penalty

AN injury time penalty saw Rangers lose their first game of the SWPL season this afternoon.

Summer Green’s 92nd minute spot-kick secured all three points for Celtic, despite the Gers dominating large spells of the match.

Malky Thomson named one change to the side from last weekend’s victory over Hibs with Brogan Hay coming into the starting eleven and Daina Bourma on the bench.

Rangers had a number of corners in the opening stages of the game, but weren’t able to test Chloe Logan in the Celtic goal.

Jenna Fife was called into action on the 9th minute as Summer Green’s curling effort was pushed over the bar by the Gers number one, before Natalie Ross saw her shot go just over shortly after.

On the 31st minute Nicola Docherty had a shot for Rangers as a clearance from Celtic fell to the left-back on the edge of the box. She hit it first time, but the effort was wide of the target.

Rangers had a great chance on the 35th minute as a lovely pass from Lizzie Arnot picked out Zoe Ness who raced towards goal but her shot was held comfortably by Chloe Logan.

Malky Thomson’s side came close to breaking the deadlock just a few minutes later as Brogan Hay delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Zoe Ness laid the ball off to captain Clare Gemmell but her shot was cleared off the line by Celtic.

The visitors threatened from the kick-off as Sarah Ewens shot was just inches over the crossbar.

Chloe Logan denied Rangers the opener on the 50th minute as a free-kick swung in the box was chested down by Zoe Ness to Chelsea Cornet. The midfielder fired a powerful strike towards goal but the Celtic keeper got enough on the ball to tip it over the bar.

As both teams searched for a breakthrough Sarah Ewans saw her shot go just wide of the target before Zoe Ness picked out Daina Bourma but her shot was saved by Chloe Logan.

Jenna Fife made two terrific saves for Rangers in the space of 30 seconds with 20 minutes of the game remaining. First the Gers keeper denied Lisa Robertson from a free-kick, before doing well to get a hand on Caitlin Hayes’ header from the resulting corner.

Rangers were pressing for a break through as Demi Vance’s shot spun just wide of the target.

Celtic were awarded a penalty in the 92nd minute for a handball in the Rangers box. Summer Green stepped up to the spot and sent the ball beyond Jenna Fife.
