Gio Praises Mentality of Players

GIOVANNI van Bronckhorst praised the mentality of his Rangers players as they made it four wins in a row in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park this afternoon.

The Light Blues had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock in Lanarkshire as goals from Malik Tillman and John Lundstram sealed all three points despite Stuart McKinstry’s 77th minute free-kick for Motherwell.

Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, van Bronckhorst was delighted with the spirit of his team: “We’re happy with the points and the win. We had to bounce back from the midweek game, we had a knock to our confidence on Wednesday. That’s why we had to be here to perform well to win this game.

“We started the game well and had two big chances to score the first goal but we didn’t. After that we didn’t create a lot of chances. In the second half we changed that and started to create a lot, putting more pressure on them. In the end it was a great run from Malik for the first goal and we had a set piece goal as well. It was a great run [from Tillman], he had to get past a lot of players. You could see the powerful runs that he has and today he did that really well, which opened up the game for us and opened up the spaces.

“In those moments we had control of the goal until we conceded the free-kick. It was a well taken free-kick that, in the end, doesn’t go in that often, but today it did. After that we had to be mentally strong to make sure we got the three points and we were. We had to make sure we didn’t give any chances away and we took three vital points away.”

Academy graduate Leon King came into the team alongside Ben Davies, with the pair limiting Motherwell to very few sightings of goal throughout the 90 minutes.

He continued: “New players are coming in because of the injuries that we have at the back. We only conceded the free-kick from the side which went in, but I thought in the moments we defended really well.

“It’s important to get a win away from home. We’ve picked up a lot of points in the last four games. Now we switch back to the League Cup, but we need to keep winning the games that we’re playing and continue to focus on those games.”
