The Light Blues were in control for the majority of the contest and got their reward when Robbie Ure finished off Robbie Fraser’s cross on the stretch to give the hosts a half time lead.
Charlie Lindsay then produced a moment of quality early in the second half to wrap up the match as the Gers claimed three points and a second place finish for the second successive season.
Speaking to RangersTV after the win, Smith was delighted to end their league season with a victory at Dumbarton Stadium: “It’s good to finish off with a win and a clean sheet. Obviously we could have made it slightly easier at the end with the penalty going in.
“I thought we managed the conditions, the game and the opposition quite well. It is another couple games off that, that we have won as well, and it’s pleasing to finish on such a note.”
The goalkeeping coach praised the quality that the side showed in front of goal and the opportunities that they created throughout the evening.
He continued: “We created a few chances and we caused them problems. They had a lot of bodies back in the penalty box so it was hard to pick things out, but the moments that we did show quality we ended up sticking the ball away.
“We could have had a couple more, but we can't be too critical because it has been a long season. We will never celebrate finishing second, but to finish as high as we can in the last couple of games and obviously everyone else is finished and we had a game tonight.
“I thought we ticked off that box well tonight and we move on next to the Glasgow Cup final and we hopefully win that one as well.”
Smith was happy his side were able to finish the season strongly with four wins in a row as they prepare to face their Old Firm rivals in the City of Glasgow Cup final in their next competitive outing.
He added: “That is all we can do. This club is built on is winning games. It is not all about that, it is also about developing players. There have been great opportunities for guys to train with the first-team, be involved in squads, and play with them.
“Our job is to get these guys there and the Lowland League gives them the vehicle to try and do that. The Glasgow Cup is one that we want to try and get our hands on and retain that trophy from last season as well.
“We have got a couple of Best v Best matches now. We have taken care of the domestic stuff now, and now we have got Sunderland and Manchester United and obviously we have got Celtic in between that.
“We are looking to keep the momentum going, keep winning games and keeping clean sheets, because ultimately that is what we want the guys to do.”
