A boyhood Gers fan, Stewart put pen to paper on a two-year deal last week, and this week, has been working hard with his new teammates upon their return to pre-season training.
Gers will face Prishtina or St Joseph’s in early July and Stewart wants to play his part in what he hopes will be another hugely successful continental campaign.
Speaking exclusively this week to RangersTV, the 29 year-old, who has Europa League qualifying experience with Aberdeen, explained: “The nights are unbelievable, and growing up, I went to games in the Champions League, and it’s brilliant as a fan, but I can just imagine what it is going to be like as a player to play here at Ibrox.
“It means the world to me to get the opportunity to play for this club and the boys have welcomed me in brilliantly.
“I want to be a good team player, work hard and try to create chances for the team. If I can chip in with some goals as well, then that will be great and that will be my aim.
“So to get this opportunity, I now need to grasp it. I am excited at the opportunity and what the club is going to do this season.”
Attacker Stewart arrives at Gers knowing he faces a challenge to get in the starting XI given the way the side finished last season, winning six of their final seven games.
It’s a fight he is looking forward to, however, and he continued: “When you come to places like this, and especially Rangers, there is always a battle to get in that starting XI, and when you do that, you have to have that consistency and that level of performance to make sure the shirt is yours.
Being a Light Blues’ fan, Stewart would already have been buoyed simply by putting pen to paper and agreeing to become a Rangers player.
He has revealed, however, the further boost he received when he spoke with manager Steven Gerrard.
“To have someone like that as the gaffer,” he continued, “and just sitting there talking to him with the presence he has and what he has done in his career, it is great he has put faith in me by bringing me to the club and giving me this opportunity.
The opportunity to play alongside the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe is something which also excites Stewart, who said: “I feel like I play better with someone who looks to go in-behind, and those two strikers, with the way they play, look to go in behind.
“For me, that is ideal. I’m versatile and can play left, right or through the middle.”
