In his opening four competitive games for Rangers, the Scotland striker’s critics had a field day as he failed to find the net.
Then, in his first Old Firm derby since returning to Ibrox, he bagged a double and created headlines as his old employers Celtic were beaten 4-2 at Parkhead.
In the time since, Miller’s performance levels have remained high but no more goals have come. At least, that was the case until he arrived at Easter Road today.
It was more than a decade ago that the forward started his career in Edinburgh and his form there won him his first move to Govan.
On his second return to the capital as a Light Blues player, his stunning brace helped defeat Mixu Paatelainen’s men and take Walter Smith’s side back to the SPL summit.
Madjid Bougherra sealed the 3-0 win with his first goal for the club since signing from Charlton but it was Miller who stole the show here with a great showing.
Rangers don’t play either Hibs or Celtic again until a week-long spell in December that straddles Christmas Day.
But on this form, it appears we won’t have to wait that long to see Miller add to a tally for the season that now stands at four goals.
Smith’s team started well and almost took the lead inside two minutes when Miller crossed low into the box for Jean-Claude Darcheville.
Although the ball was scrambled clear before the striker could connect, Charlie Adam was there and poised to slide home until Ian Murray’s timely block tackle.
Home keeper Yves Ma-Kalambay wasn’t exactly helping his side and his slack pass went straight to Kevin Thomson but Miller was offside when he was played in on goal.
Hibs were all over the place at the back in the opening stages and Gers almost made them pay for it.
Another misplaced ball was picked up by Darcheville and he threaded in Miller, whose shot beat Ma-Kalambay but squirmed just past the upright from 18 yards.
Adam also had a go as the visitors knocked the ball around with confidence but he was also off target.
Just when it looked as though Rangers were in control, a mistake by Sasa Papac gave Hibernian an opportunity they should have taken advantage of.
The Bosnian seemed poised to deal with Derek Riordan’s flick but he slipped and that let in Dean Shiels on the right side of the penalty area.
Thankfully for Papac, Neil Alexander stood up well to the Northern Ireland cap’s shot and he beat it away at his near post.
Adam tried again with a free kick after Darcheville was brought down 30 yards out but he wasted it, as did his French colleague moments later when he caught sight of the frame.
Rangers were starting to dictate once more and a dangerous cross from Darcheville only needed someone in the middle to convert it but nobody was there.
Sol Bamba sent out a reminder that the sides were still level as he headed goalwards and Thomson had to nod off the line.
Then just as the hosts started to think they were making progress, they were hit with a sucker punch as Miller forced home his first on the half hour.
It was a bad goal to lose but a great one if you’re an attacker. The excellent Kirk Broadfoot was the provider, crossing low for his team-mate to head in at the near post.
Hibs tried to hit back before half-time, with a Joe Keenan cross that seemed to be drifting out of play causing all sorts of problems when Riordan kept it in on the line.
Ian Murray volleyed goalwards when the ball came back in but it smacked off the post then Alexander before Bougherra, Thomson and Papac combined to clear.
Rangers’ response was emphatic as they surged upfield and doubled their lead six minutes before the break.
Miller finished a lovely move off, curling in from the edge of the area after Mendes passed to Broadfoot and he laid off with a classy backheel.
Hibs roused themselves enough to have a go at Gers after the restart and Keenan brought out a good save from Alexander as he tried to fire in.
But it was the away side that continued to run this match and Darcheville and Adam both came close to adding further goals, the latter direct from a corner.
While they missed out, Bougherra didn’t and he thrust in a popular first strike for Gers as the game lurched into the final stages.
Thomson assisted, sending in a left-wing corner that the Algerian converted to the delight of the large travelling support.
That clinched an excellent away win and having kept a clean sheet for the first time in six games as well, Smith will have been thrilled with his day’s work.
