The Light Blues were being held 1-1 at the break with Lewis Smith cancelling out a Scott Arfield opener, but Joe Aribo, Alfredo Morelos and an Arfield howitzer made it a comfortable victory for the Ibrox men in South Lanarkshire in the Scottish Cup.
Speaking afterwards to RangersTV, Gerrard said: “I think the scoreline maybe flattered us a little bit if you look at what happened in the first-half.
“I thought how we went about trying to create chances here was very good and very impressive. We put a lot of talent on the pitch so we expected that, though I was disappointed with us in the first half defensively in-terms of our organisation and our balance behind the ball which led to them getting a few chances and scoring against us.
“Once we did that, we played some nice stuff and we went on to create a lot of chances and scored some really impressive goals.”
The manager was then asked how pleased he was to get a reaction from his defenders in the second half to limit Accies to effectively no chances at all after his half-time words.
The manager continued: “The second half showing was fantastic, and the reason being is because second half, we approached it right with the right attitude and mentality from a defensive point of view.
“I thought first-half, in possession, we were really good getting in-behind them and creating and we could have scored with Hagi’s header and Morelos’ chance, so chance creation wasn’t a problem first-half, it was just defensively, on the transition, we were probably in the wrong place positionally and we weren’t on the same page – one defender was stepping-in and three were dropping deep, and we were a little bit flaky at times.
Continuing on the quality of the three second-half goals, the manager said: “I was very, very impressed. The Joe Aribo goal was fantastic with Ryan Kent going on the outside and doing what he does with fantastic skill and an excellent assist, but that is still a tough finish so credit to Joe there.
“Alfredo, it was was nice to see him back scoring. He has come close in the first half and come close against Aberdeen, but hopefully that goal does him the world of good now and he can push on from there.
There was a worry in the second half with Borna Barisic having to be replaced by Andy Halliday, with the manager updating: “There is a concern there at the moment. I think he will be a doubt for midweek, and hopefully the physio’s can work a bit of magic – he has a bit of tightness in the hip but we don’t think it is a major concern.
“But, he is one we are going to have to do our best to get out there on Wednesday as he is so important for us.”
