The former defender insists the trip to play in Glasgow is special for himself as he has witnessed several Dutch players pull on the Rangers jersey and bring attention back to his home country.
Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the match, the former Manchester United defender feels privileged to be involved and is looking forward to being part of the Dutch influence: “It is always nice to play in these Legends games. Going to Glasgow is a little bit special for me as well because I haven't been there a lot to be honest, but I know Rangers have had a lot of Dutch players which gives me a bit of a connection with the club.
“I am looking forward to it, to see the crowd and the city, to be over there, and of course to play in this game which is always very interesting. It is always nice to be on the pitch again as a former player, and to see if I can still kick a ball.
“Everybody in the Netherlands, they know Rangers as a club and what they have been doing in Scotland throughout the years in terms of winning trophies and being very important to the country and the city. When Dick Advocaat went to Rangers, a lot of Dutch players went over like [Bert] Konterman, the De Boer brothers, and [Michael] Mols.
“That has a big impact for the Dutch people as well because, as football lovers, we like the big clubs in Europe, and we find it always very interesting when players go abroad to play for big clubs like Rangers. That gives the players and the club a lot of extra attention.
“In general, the people in the Netherlands know what Rangers have been doing in the past and also now what they have been doing for the Dutch people as well. That is always a good feeling for us Dutch to see that we have been part of a big successful club.”
Stam last made the trip to Ibrox as Feyenoord boss back in 2019 and he admits it was a special game, despite the result, following the sad passing of Fernando Ricksen.
He continued: “That game was special to be there, to play against Rangers in a particular game, but as well with Fernando and the situation that he had been in with his illness and everything was hard to see.
“For me, in general, the whole process that he has been into and that eventually ended, which was a tragedy for him and his family, for all the people that knew him and the fans, and the club that supported him as well. It is always difficult to see these situations because Fernando was a great guy to be with as a player and also as a person, and I knew him as well.
“The game that I played with Feyenoord over there gave it an extra attention for us and for myself, and that made it very special of course. We didn't get the result in that game which makes it harder for us but that is how it goes. Rangers have got a very good team with good players, and we weren't good enough on the day.”
