It’s the first home match of the UEFA Europa League league phase for Philippe Clement’s side and following an impressive 2-0 victory away to Malmo last Thursday evening, Butland believes the squad are in a good place ahead of the tie.
Speaking to the media at this afternoon’s pre-match press conference, he said: “There is good confidence in the camp, we had a great result away from home last week and we followed that up with a win at the weekend, so confidence is high.
“We obviously have great confidence in ourselves, what we can do at home and what we have done in the past. In this new format, getting off to a good start puts you in a good position so hopefully we can follow up tomorrow, the belief is definitely there.
“These are huge games, Rangers is a huge club, and to be involved in high-profile, important games, against good European opposition is what you want to be a part of.”
With six clean sheets in the last seven matches, Butland was asked about the importance of those for the squad as he adapts to a new centre-back partnership in front of him in John Souttar and Robin Pröpper.
Butland continued: “Keeping a clean sheet gives us a real platform to play, if you start conceding goals it becomes a habit. The game against Hibs at the weekend, if that becomes a game where you concede after little recovery time and perhaps not playing our best then you lose that defensive stability and then those games become really difficult.
“John and Robin have both been brilliant, I think for someone like Robin to come in he is an experienced defender, he has played at some great clubs and at some good levels as well. He has stepped in, and we have seen the best of him, and I think there is even more to come.
“What Connor [Goldson] moving on has done is allow John to perhaps play on his more favoured side, but I think he did fantastic for us on the left last year as well. He is someone who gives everything for the club, he has grown incredibly as a defender, and I think he is maturing into a really top centre-half, so it is great.
“I love having him in front of me and I think as a partnership with Robin they are growing, and it shows.”
Butland, who got his first taste of playing in European football when he joined Rangers, says he is relishing being a part of such big occasions.
He said: “I feel great, with the number of games you play here, there are always things you can pick out and things you can do better, but I feel extremely comfortable here. I love the work that I do, I love my job, and I love playing for this football club.
“They are huge, they are games and teams with huge stars, huge budgets, huge European credentials and for us it is an opportunity to test ourselves, something we have never shied away from.
“As a player I didn't get the chance personally to compete in European football until now, I witnessed some of it at Manchester United a couple of years ago but to be able to perform in these games and be a part of them is something special, so it is something I think everyone steps up for. Fans and players alike, and we are looking forward to it.
“We will relish the challenge and that is certainly something we have done in European games and something we need to continue throughout all competitions we are in, but they are great opportunities for people to perform and showcase what they are about which we have done.
“Not a lot of changes, we are perhaps a little bit more focused on some individuals and what to expect from some but on any given night anything can happen so you just try and prepare mentally and as physically as best you can. I feel in a great place and in good spirits and just looking forward to the game and whatever comes my way.”
