The captain stroked home from the penalty spot to etch his name onto another club record, yet the Gers were pegged back in the second period despite Braga being reduced to ten men.
Speaking to RangersTV after the match, the 34-year-old said of making history and his side’s performance: “When it all settles down, I’ll look back on it and be really proud of it, but ultimately I wanted the three points tonight.
“If I didn’t or did score, I wanted the clean sheet. It hurts, but I’ll always try and help the team no matter what.
“As long as we learn from this, and we’ve shown in the last couple of weeks that we’re building more consistency in what we want to do.
“It’s a quick learning lesson, and we now have an important game at the weekend at home.
“We need to go into this weekend and get the three points no matter what.”
Tavernier’s goal arrived at the perfect time, right on the stroke of half-time, to capitalise on the momentum the Gers had built up from the half-hour mark.
However, he was left to lament a missed opportunity as Braga equalised despite star man Rodrigo Zalazar being shown a straight red card following an altercation with Nico Raskin.
He added: “I felt that we missed an opportunity tonight and we should have gotten the three points. I felt that we could have been more patient around their final third in our decision-making.
“We should have been a bit more patient working against ten men and working it more. In every game, you need to be clinical in both penalty areas.
“I always back players, and everyone makes mistakes, but we should have had that game wrapped up before that happened.
“I felt we started slow in the first 20 minutes, but it felt like after that we let go of the handbrake and went really after them, which was our game plan from the start.
“We know mathematically it’s not over, and we know we need to win the next game at Rangers. We’re going to go into the next game and try to get the three points.”
