Jo Potter: Focus Is Fully on Us Ahead of Old Firm

JO POTTER says her Rangers side’s full focus is on themselves as they shape up for the first Old Firm clash of their post-split campaign.

Broadwood Stadium is the venue for the Light Blues on Sunday afternoon as they look to continue their positive momentum.

The Gers are unbeaten against their Old Firm rivals this term and have plundered a remarkable 17 goals in their last three outings.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday’s derby clash, Potter commented: “We know it’s always a tough game and what these games mean to both clubs.

“We’re preparing for the same Celtic that we have for the last year-and-a-half.

“We expect a really tough game and a good side to come out and cause us problems should we allow them to.

“It’s something that was always spoken about when I first came in and something we’ve been working towards for a long time now, having to deal with the emotions of playing against your rivals and in an Old Firm.

“There are so many tough games in the league and those games aren’t the ones that you pinpoint at the first stage anymore because we have Hibs, Glasgow City, Celtic, Hearts and Motherwell – all these teams that you can pick and say you’re playing a top team this week.

“Maybe in years gone by those were the games that you really looked for and were competing against year in, year out.

“It’s quite different this year and it’s got a different feeling around it because every single game is a tough game and it feels like a rival game.

“It’s been good for us to make sure we’re keeping our emotions in check and know what it’s like to play against Celtic and City quite regularly.

“We need to make sure we’re doing what we need to do to beat a very good team on Sunday.”

The two teams played out a 2-2 draw the last time Celtic visited Broadwood Stadium back in October.

However, Rangers have held the upper hand in the head-to-head since, running out 3-2 winners in the league in Hamilton before ending Celtic’s Sky Sports Cup campaign in the semi-final stage in January.

She added: “When I first came in it was one of the biggest things that was evident to me: the Celtic games were really sticking out to the players.

“I really felt there was a mental battle there to overcome. It’s something that we’ve really worked on in the last 18 months to be able to overcome that, turn the tide, and make sure we’re the team that is coming out on top the majority of the time.

“You’re not going to do that 100 per cent of the time because they’re a very good team with a very good squad that has been together for such a long time.

“We needed to make sure that we slowly turned it and changed the mentality towards those games. I feel that’s something we’ve definitely done.

“It doesn’t mean we’ve finished doing that and these games still hold something. We need to continue to work on that and continue to work on ourselves.

“I feel we’re in a much better position now mentality wise than what we maybe were a year ago.

“When I first came in, the players were speaking about Celtic, their players, what they do well, and I tried to change the mentality and speak about what we do well and what we can do to hurt them.

“We do some really hard work on the training pitch and in the analysis suite to make sure we’re not leaving any stone unturned, making sure we’re working on the things that we haven’t done very well previously.

“And, also, telling the players we do things very well, and there’s certain things we can do that will hurt the opposition.

“It’s something I’ve stayed consistent with since I stepped into the building: what we’re going to do and how we’re going to hurt opponents.”
