Jordan Milsom: Key Principles Remain The Same For Pre-Season

RANGERS returned to pre-season training yesterday as the hard work ahead of another hugely exciting season stepped-up a level.

Like previous years, players have still been tuned in over the break with an extensive programme set to them by Head of Performance, Jordan Milsom, but now the work has truly begun under the watchful eyes of the RangersTV cameras.

Over the coming weeks, the only place for access to pre-season training will be your club TV channel, official website, app, and social media channels as we continue to deliver exclusive, premier content.

This year will be the first ‘normal’ pre-season many of this group will have had, with no early European qualifiers nor the full constraints of Covid restrictions as there were last year.

But the key principles remain the same, and Milsom explained to RangersTV: "The lads who have been here for the three seasons previously know what it is going to be like - it is going to be tough and there is going to be a lot of physical work to get through but we have to get through that as we are going into a packed August with nine games so we have to be ready to play every three days and be ready to play at the tempo and level the manager and coaches want, but then also be able to recover from that and do it again within 90-odd hours.

"Our pre-season won't look much different to the pre-seasons which have gone before. We have a little more time and it will just be more of the same."

One of the highlights for the performance department last year would have been the physical development of a number of players such as Ianis Hagi, Joe Aribo and Scott Wright.

Milsom gave those individuals huge credit for that, and continued: "I have been really pleased as those players bought into the process and understood there were probably areas where they could develop a bit more than other areas, and from a physical perspective, they really embraced that.

"A lot of the credit has to go to them as they are the guys who get up every day, come in, and put the work in and apply themselves around the clock to give themselves the best chance of making those gains.

"So as a staff, we are really delighted, but the credit has to go to those players because they are the ones who put in the effort and put in the hard yards."

One major difference this summer, which is as a result of the club’s continually improving on-field performance, is having six players involved at international tournaments.

Those players are yet to return to the Rangers Training Centre, and Milsom explained how the coming weeks will work for them.

He added: "It is a little bit different for those lads as they haven't had the volume of time off, with maybe only two to three weeks off, so the chances of detraining are a lot less as they haven't had that time.

"We have also got to be mindful of there being players having been in a tough tournament for a month and in some instances, six weeks from when they met up.

"So we have to factor that in and ensure we don't burn players out as well, but on the flip-side, the players coming back in are really important players.

"It is why they are internationalists and why they are playing at the level they are playing at, but we will find that balance among us all to ensure they are rested but prepared to contribute when the beginning of August comes around."
