His contribution to his national team is legendary, of that there is no question, and it seems each of the club sides he has represented in the game also hold him in similarly high esteem.
A place in Rangers folklore for his now four league titles and 300+ appearances is granted, but at Southampton too, they also view him as a genuine hero of theirs.
His former teammate, captain, friend and now First-Team Coach at Southampton, Kelvin Davis, a legend himself on the South Coast, credits Davis with playing a massive role in helping Saints become a genuine Premier League force when he joined them after they were promoted to the English top flight in 2012.
"We were on the back of a double promotion from League One and we were a real, tight group as we had all been together since League One,” Kelvin told rangers.co.uk.
"The club had put together a squad of young, hungry players (which I wasn't one of, by the way as I was quite old by then!) but a group of players that could progress and spend four or five years together as a team and hopefully build on that success.
"He came in after we had double promotions and I think every team that gets promoted, or every club and squad that gets promoted, you know the club is going to strengthen the squad and you know players are going to come in.
"There is a genuine consensus within that squad of 'is this guy going to come in and help us? Is he going to better than what we have got? Is this guy going to fit in to the dressing room? Is he going to be on our level in-terms of values and understanding of how we are and what we do at Southampton?'
"When we were a club that was growing to become an established Premier League team - and international players are more few and far between in the Championship - we ended up having a group of players that were making debuts that season in our first season in the Premier League - the likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Ricky Lambert - guys that went on to play for England.
"What Davo gave us - and by then he was an established international player, he had experience of playing in the Premier League and was coming into a squad of players that were striving to be at that level - it was a massive signing for the club at the time as it made us feel that we were getting a complete player.
"In the past, we had probably signed players that were more potential signings, but in Davo, we signed a fully-fledged, Premier League-ability and pedigree, international footballer, so it was a big step up for the dressing room when Davo came.
"To watch his growth since coming to the club and to play in the teams where we finished in our record-high position in the Premier League in the club's history whilst he was in the team and in the dressing room shows what an impact he had."
Through all the tributes paid to Steven Davis this week, one attribute of his stands out above all else – his character.
Former ‘keeper Kelvin continued: "There is always a little bit of trepidation when new signings come in after a promotion that, ultimately, the guys that join a club are taking positions in the team.
"But what I would say about Davo, when his name was mentioned and he was coming to Southampton, you were waiting to see what the character is like, and one of Davo's biggest assets is his character - the way he holds himself, presents himself, carries himself, speaks to people and communicates to people in a manner which is always respectful and always with good sense.
"What I mean by that is he just floated and fitted straight into the dressing room without any issues at all - that doesn't sound like a skill in itself but it is and he came in to a successful team and made it stronger.
"Without any awkward situations, he just came in, hit the ground running, performed well in training and ended up playing 200 games for us in the Premier League.
"I think his first asset is his best asset - and that is his character and what he brings after that is his quality on the pitch, his professionalism and everything else is part of what the player is.
"But it is the person first that made him settle so fast into Southampton at the time."
His captaining of Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 – their first major tournament in 30 years, is legendary.
He also became a respected Premier League captain while at Southampton, and led them to the 2016 League Cup final, where but for the inspiration of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, may well have led his men up the famous Wembley steps to collect the trophy.
His leadership skills are there for all to see, although they perhaps don’t fit the traditional bill expected of a stereotypical footballer.
Kelvin said: "It's interesting because Davo can handle a football conversation with anyone and he is a very intelligent guy and a very knowledgeable football guy.
"What is interesting is the kind of captain you would normally associate with the armband of maybe being more vocal - that's not what Davo is and he leads certainly by example.
"He is more of a quiet leader and his style is more quiet leadership - more kind of personal in that I would say he would have more private conversations than big, open dressing room conversations.
"That's not to say he can't handle those situations as whenever we have team meetings, he would have an opinion and it was often a very good opinion and I think that is how he gained the respect of the dressing room.
"He was rarely off where you would need to be, what you would need to say and what is the right thing at the right time and I think that, on top of his ability on the pitch and his consistency of performance ultimately led him to that captain's armband and certainly for us and his country, he has been very successful.
"His leadership is almost like his playing style in that he quietly gets about his business and, certainly from a style of football-wise, it fitted Southampton at the time with possession football.
"He could handle the ball and take the ball under pressure and he has had no problem receiving the ball anywhere on the pitch and I think his quality always shone through and he rarely gave the ball away and he rarely had a poor game for Southampton.
"I think when the fans remember Steven, I don't think they will be remembering him for great goals and 10/10 performances, but what they will all say I think is his consistent level.
"When he was on the pitch, you knew exactly what you were going to get from him and that is a massive asset to have in any team.
"A lot of people in football would not realise the quality of Davo unless they had played with him, and I'm sure there are many opponents would talk about Davo."
Kelvin is thrilled to see his good friend now continuing to flourish here at Rangers – with the Steven having recently committed to himself for at least another season, where Gers will be looking to return to the Champions League.
He added: "Having the experience I have myself of playing up to 39, I have got genuine respect and a big element of pride when you see a player - as I know the commitment you have to give - play at that age and at that level, with that style and being out there producing the performances.
"I know the level of professionalism you need to give, and it’s not just himself, it is the support from his family as well.
"You are genuinely giving everything to keep that level of performance and to make sure that you can continue to stay at that level.
"The respect I have for Davo is massive for that reason and also because of his character and the way he is, he absolutely deserves it.
"To break that record and to make that amount of appearances, it shows you the mentality of the guy and every day when you are getting up, you are focused, you know what you want to do and you know what you want to achieve.
"I think that skill isn't in everyone, so I respect him a lot for that and the fact he has been a teammate and I have had the privilege to be on the team with him and helped us to get to the levels we got to, I wish him every success and I am sure with Davo's abilities, I am sure he can continue to play as long as he wants."
