Deadly Doddsy struck again with his third double in four games to haul Ger out of the mire after Killie had stormed into an early two-goal lead.
It truly was the Dodds couple – just as his sloppy mates did their Oscar with an untidy opening it was left to Billy to slip into the role of Felix with some cool, clinical mopping up.
And if Gers emerged from this sticky patch without dropping any points they will owe the little striker a huge vote of thanks.
To be fair, Killie came out and had a go at Rangers. Bobby Williamson must have watched the 2-1 win over St Johnstone last week when Advocaat’s troops gave another stuttering show and decided to go for broke. Still, the Ibrox gaffer must be fuming that his side conceded two easy goals in quick succession.
The penalty was as scandal. Konterman had no need to tackle like that just inside the box while Andy McLaren had three men around him at the second goal and still managed to break away and score.
Advocaat must be extremely worried about the first-half performance. Rangers have failed to get going in the games I have seen then in so far this season.
Kevbin McGowne’s sending off was the running point and the pattern changed as Gers finally got to grips with the games.
Killie sat back and defended leaving just one man up, too early for them to do that. When a team reacts like that you know you’re always going to get chances in front of goal.
When McCann was brought down it gave Rangers a lifeline because it w as a crucial time to score, just before half-time. That surely cast some doubt into the minds of the Kilmarnock players and in the second-half it was one-way traffic.
The amount of pressure Gers had was bound to pay off, although Killie still managed a few breakaways.
Advocaat was right to bring on Kanchelskis because the home side’s defence was packed and the extra width created a bit more space in the centre for the front men.
Barry Ferguson supplied Kanchelski’s numerous times and that’s what created the opening for Dodds to level.
With talk of new strikers the wee man had proved he’s worth his weight in gold.
It was a great game for Kenny Miller to score, especially after coming on from the bench.
Once again Advocaat must be applauded for making two telling substitutions, but on the other hand he should not have been forced to do it. In the first-half he could have taken off just about anyone.
I suppose Rangers fans will be happy to have won 4-2 but they can’t expect to play like that in Europe and get away with it. As a team, they did not defence form the front. Their marking and passing were terrible and they failed to get a grip of the game in midfield. If you don’t expect these things you can expect to be punished – and that’s what happened.
But they came out in the second-half and fought back well. It might have even been five or six goals. That’s three games they have not really performed in and yet they remain unbeaten.
It must be a plus for Advocaat but it can’t continue for long before they era really punished. The European games are coming thick and fast and if Rangers are to be ready for the Champions League they must get to grips with their form as soon as possible.
