Kirsty Maclean Departs Rangers

RANGERS can today confirm Kirsty Maclean has departed the club to join Liverpool this summer.

The 20-year-old, who is a product of the Light Blues’ youth academy, broke through the system at the Gers and made her top team debut at just 16 years of age.

Making a handful of appearances at the end of 21/22 season, she then put pen to paper on a first professional contract in August 2022.

The midfielder was part of the Light Blues side that won their first ever SWPL title under Malky Thomson in the summer of 2022, before winning the Sky Sports Cup for the first time later that year.

She then penned an extension on that deal the following summer, which kept her in Glasgow for another two seasons. She was part of the side that racked up back-to-back domestic cup doubles across the previous two campaigns.

After Jo Potter’s arrival, the youngster was a mainstay in the team, going on to reach the 100 appearance milestone for the Gers in an Old Firm Derby victory in May.

A fully fledged Scotland international, Maclean has represented her country on 10 occasions, most recently in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in the women’s Nations League at the beginning of June.

Speaking after departing the club, Maclean commented: “It was an incredibly hard decision to leave.

“I think obviously being at the club for so long it means a lot to me.

“To leave was hard was but I feel like it was the right time for me to move on to something new.

“I will miss everyone at the club so much. I said to the girls they all mean so much to me and I mean it.

“It was really hard to leave but I am leaving with the best memories and it has been the best 11 years; I couldn't have asked for a better group of girls to do it with.”

Women’s and Girls’ Managing Director Donald Gillies said: “While we are disappointed Kirsty has chosen to move on; we cannot express how grateful we are to her and her family for their 11 year stay at the club.

“Joining the club at nine years old, playing throughout the academy, representing her country at every age and stage, and becoming a professional player with over 100 appearances is a legacy very few boast, never mind all of this before turning 21!

“An incredible achievement for someone we hold in highest regard, and wish every success in her onward journey.”

Everyone at Rangers thanks Kirsty for her contributions over the years and wishes her the very best of luck at her new club.
