The young Gers dropped out of the competition at the hands of Championship side Queen’s Park in a 3-1 defeat at the City Stadium in a match they controlled for the majority of the first half and took the lead to show for it before a red card ultimately turned the contest on its head.
David McCallum’s run to the quarter-finals included victories over B’oness United, Clyde, Fraserburgh and Stenhousemuir before ultimately being beaten by the Spiders last night.
Speaking to RangersTV after they exited the cup and reflecting on their matches throughout the campaign as a whole, he commented: “100 per cent it has been a good experience.
“You are playing against teams who play men's football like that and who are trying to beat younger players.
“They will obviously try to use advantages like their strength or their physical power or whatever.
“But the way we have overcome games and how we have won games quite comfortably has been very good development for all of us as a team.”
“It is important, you can't train going down to 10 men until you are in the moment playing in a must-win game.
“You can't train stuff like that and you can't deal with that out with being in it.
“It was a tough challenge of course but we did hold our own and we tried our best.”
The centre-back summed up the evening overall on a night that could have gone differently and said the team can take a lot from their showing and the way they rallied together after they had to play 55 minutes of the match with 10 men.
He added: “I think overall we actually performed decent.
“For the level of game that it was and being down 10 men I think we actually gave them a good game even though the scoreline hasn't gone the way we wanted it to.
“I think we held our own and at times we actually outplayed them and created the better chances.
“It did take us maybe five minutes to get going but once we actually found our gear we were very good on the ball, created better chances, we scored the goal and we hit the post.
“We can take loads of positives away from this game and we did perform well as well and just to be 1-0 up at half-time was good for us and gave us a good foothold.
“It is difficult, going down to 10 men early it is always going to be hard.
“Especially in this type of game where the next round of the cup is on the line and playing against a Championship side who have been playing week in and week out.
“It is difficult but that is just the time we need to rally together as a team and stick together which I think we did manage to do but unfortunately we just couldn't get the result.”
