EVERYONE at Rangers Football Club is saddened to learn of the recent passing of former club physio and trainer Lawrie Smith.
After leaving a job at Arbroath Infirmary and joining Dundee FC in 1959, Smith was part of Bob Shankly’s backroom team as the Dens Park club were crowned Scottish champions in 1961/62 and then embarked on a run to the semi-finals of the European Cup the following season.
After Shankly left Dundee for Hibs in 1965, Smith would also leave Tayside to join Clyde then Rangers in 1967 where he worked as a physio under managers Scot Symon, David White and Willie Waddell.
He would stay at Ibrox until 1970, with Jock Wallace taking over as the club’s trainer under Waddell after he had previously been a coach at Hearts.
The thoughts of everyone at Rangers are with Lawrie’s family and friends at this difficult time.
