Leanne Crichton: We’ll Be Ready to Go

THE SPWPL post-split fixtures were recently announced, and with the final 10 league outings of the season now locked in, Leanne Crichton is raring for the domestic action to return in the coming weeks.

Following the new extended international break, the Gers will be straight into the thick of things, with two trips to the capital in three days, facing both Hearts and Hibs and then a home match against Glasgow City to come.

League outings will come quickly, but the Head Coach insists her team will be well equipped to pick up where they left off, she said: “Post-split games? We were desperate for those fixtures to come out. I know everybody in Scottish football was probably the same.

“We know how widely anticipated the split is for every club and how competitive it is.

“I am probably pleased, actually. When I look at the run of games, it might be a tight turnaround in those opening couple of days, but I think, notoriously, Oriam and Meadowbank are two tough venues.

“For us to have them in the first couple of days will have us ready, and we will make sure that we are prepared and we are ready to go off the back of the international break to hit the ground running with those two games.

“Then obviously round off that week with Glasgow City at the end, and then we know we have got the cup final to look forward to in March as well.

“I don’t think in the split historically there has really been an advantage to home and away, or at which time you play each other.

“It has predominantly gone down to the last day of the season.

“We just hope that we can do enough to claw back that deficit.

“The five points that Glasgow City have on us at the top of the table, and we'll give huge respect to the teams around us that are also competing for that first and second spot, and we'll keep the focus on ourselves.”

Rangers have managed to get several players back off the treatment table in recent weeks, with the return to full fitness for the likes of Brogan Hay, as well as Kathy Hill and Leah Eddie prior to that.

Now having more of her squad available, Crichton gave an update on two of the longer-term absentees and when they could be expected to return.

She added: “Lizzie [Arnot] has been back in training for the past week or so, which is great.

“I think the way that we managed to bring the squad back together, Lizzie has probably had a bit more relief in the sense that there has not been as much pressure on her to get back.

“We wanted to be patient with her, just because of where she is in her career and the type of player and person she is. We have allowed her that time and space, she has tracked really well throughout the whole rehab process, and the medical staff have been superb with her.

“Hopefully, off the back of the international break, she will be close to certain match minutes anyway, but it has been a slow and gradual build-up, which has benefitted everybody, but it would be great if we can have her available post-international break and have her back.

“Sarah [Ewens], she is tracking really well. For her, there have been a couple of setbacks, not too substantial; she has still been tracking really well and back on the pitch.

“Even that gives the group such a massive lift once she is back, not certainly in the team session, but she is on the pitch and visible with the group.

“I know how much energy they take from that, and similarly, how much energy Sarah has taken from that.

“We are tracking well that will have her back before the end of the season, certainly, but with that type of injury, there is no pressure on Sarah.

“It is about making sure that when we get her back with have her back for good, and it is not a rushed job to try and make her available for X amount of games or whatnot.

“It is just when she is ready, she'll be back, and she'll be certainly in amongst it with the group, but she is doing superbly well in her rehab.”
