Lorena Sumser Outlines Rangers Italian Preseason Plans

LORENA SUMSER has outlined Rangers’ pre-season plans for the week having landed in Northern Italy for a training camp.

The Light Blues will spend six days abroad which will include playing friendly matches against both Milan clubs on Wednesday and Saturday evening respectively.

Speaking to RangersTV on the benefits of having the camp and how that will look for the squad as they step up preparations for the new season, she commented: “We are very excited to get out of Scotland as well, enjoy the sun here, enjoy a bit of warmth and just experiencing a pre-season camp is always something different every time.

“No matter if you are going to Spain or going to Italy now and we have two really tough opponents, they are going to challenge us a lot but we are excited for that.

“They are both great teams and we are a great team so we will just take the most out of it and enjoy the experience while we are here.

“I feel like the training camp is always a bonding experience as well because you are basically spending 24/7 together.

“Especially learning to get to know the new players and young players that we brought just a bit closer than you usually would on a normal training day.

“It is that bonding experience and it is going to challenge us a team as well.

“We presented well the last couple of weeks already in pre-season and now finally getting games in as well. Which the girls are excited for and I am excited to get that routine back in and take the next step towards the season.

“Two matches in a week is always a bit tough but we have great conditions for everyone in terms of recovery as well.

“I am excited for that; we are taking a challenge as well; the mentality of the girls is great when it comes to those kind of games.

“We know what the teams bring like the experience and quality as well. We are trying to match that up and I am positive that the girls will do the best that they can and we will see where it all goes from there.

The Lead Women’s and Girls’ Performance coach has spoken on pre-season so far for the squad, with the side returning from their summer break on July 8 and building up to their first outing back on the pitch last Sunday.

She added: “Pre-season has been challenging in the first part having no manager obviously but the girls have handled it like such professionals.

“Putting in quite the good work, Hagi our interim coach for the time being just putting in amazing work.

“That situation also helped us grow as a group. It has been successful so far I know with the games rolling in we are able to take that next step to enter the season positive as well.

“Just get that bit of competitiveness in because you can as many runs or as many training games as you can but nothing actually makes up for having a real opponent or game.

“I am happy the way we are getting games in now and just trying to bring that on the pitch where we have been working so hard in the last couple of weeks since pre-season started.

“Props to the girls, they had a phenomenal off season.

“They all really showed up and set their targets before we actually entered pre-season which we helped me massively just to be able to develop a bit more of an idea what we actually want to do in pre-season and in the testing, they surprised me with some of the numbers in a very positive way.

“I am happy that the off season was really successful then we can bring that into pre-season.

“It is basically just getting them match ready, keeping their fitness up and improving it even more then also challenging them, because you are not able to create like ball speed or something without actually having the environment of a football pitch or without having an opponent.

“This is what we are focusing more on now to bring that basis that we created in the off season over to pre-season to create that footballing specific environment more, but also build up their strength or rebuild it up even though they are super strong in my eyes.

“This is the goal for pre-season and just be resilient for the season to come because we know it is going to be a long season with a lot of tough games coming up and want to make it as positive as possible and hopefully end the season on a good note on the 31 May.

“But until then we just have to be resilient but I think we are on a good way there. The girls’ mindset is phenomenal and that helps a lot as well.”
