JOHN LUNDSTRAM has been speaking for the first time as a Rangers player – and he can’t wait to build on his already extensive football knowledge.
Lundstram, 27, joined the Light Blues yesterday having spent the last two seasons in the Premier League with Sheffield United, and chatted exclusively to RangersTV – with your club channel as well as website, official app and our social channels being the only place to hear from the club on pre-season.
He explained his reasoning behind making the switch to Glasgow, telling us: “The size of the club and speaking to the manager was a massive draw for me. Speaking to [John Fleck] and people like that – as soon as I mentioned it to them, they told me not to hesitate in getting up here and I am made up to get it over the line and hopefully I can contribute to a bit of success.
“There are so many ‘football people’ around the club. Gary McAllister is another who I looked up to when I was a kid and I am just eager to get started with the football knowledge I’m sure I’m going to gain.
“I feel like I have matured as a player and as a person. I have a fire in my belly, and I am raring to go.”
Lundstram was part of the Sheffield United team which won promotion to the Premier League in 2019 – and he reckons that winning mentality which was built by then-boss Chris Wilder will stand him in good stead at Ibrox.
He continued: “Definitely, and it is something the old manager instilled in us all back then. Obviously, it didn’t end the way he or any of us would have wanted there, but to be here now, I know the winning mentality here and the demands of the Rangers fans, so I just can’t wait and hopefully I can bring some of that winning mentality and bring some more of that success from last season.”
Lundstram also revealed his dream of playing Champions League football for Rangers, adding: “That was another massive draw for me, and hopefully, if we can qualify for the group stages, then that will be unbelievable.
“Hopefully, if we can qualify for the group stages, that will be unbelievable and if I can help the lads do that it will be unbelievable for everyone at the club.”
