Maclean: Expecting A Tough Game

KIRSTY Maclean is expecting a tough season opener but wants the squad to get off to a fast start as Rangers look for an opening day victory against Spartans this weekend.

The Light Blues travel to Edinburgh as their Scottish Power Women’s Premier League campaign gets underway in Jo Potter’s first league match in charge.

Speaking to RangersTV ahead of the new season the midfielder has encouraged the side to get off to a fast start with three points in the capital.

She said: “We are expecting a really tough game against Spartans, we had a lot of close games against them last season, so we are expecting it to be really tough, but we are going to have a lot of the ball so we need to make sure our ball speed is up high and do what we need to do.

“Last season was really disappointing, but I think we parked that and are ready to move on, and are looking forward to the new season starting, getting off to a fast start is what we are looking for and if we can do that it just builds momentum going to into the next games as well.”

The 18-year-old has reflected on a positive week-long training camp in Spain in the build-up to their first fixture and believes testing themselves against top quality opposition in Levante will stand them in good stead for what lies ahead.

She continued: “It was a really productive week, obviously we have got new signings that have come in as well, so for them to come away it just gave us a lot more bonding time and getting to know our relationships on and off the pitch and it really improves them looking forward to the season.”

“It was a really tough game, we always knew that they were going to be a really tough opponent, I thought we had a real focus on our shape and how were going to play against them. A lot of focus was just on how were going to play and I think it showed in the game with the result that we managed to get, so it was really positive.”

The midfielder believes the squad are in a good physical place ahead of their first league match and feels she as a player can learn a lot off her new head coach in the coming season.

She added: “Jo has got the experience of playing as well so she has been there and done it. I think for me as such a young player as well to be able to learn off Jo especially not just the young ones but the more experienced players as well and Jo has been her full career playing football so she will know what it is like, so for her to teach all of us and how to play it is just going to help us.

“We have had a really positive pre-season, everyone came back after the break in good shape, and the sport scientists have pushed us really hard so our fitness levels are definitely up there.”
