Thomson named Brianna Westrup as captain for the new campaign this week after Clare Gemmell retired at the end of last season but says it is important leadership comes from across the pitch.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV this week, he said: “Brianna is a mature individual, it is not just what she does in training but it is the way she carries herself and the interaction that she has with the rest of the group.
“She is a calming influence but a driven individual as well so it is befitting that she captains the team. Brianna said it in her interview that she is the captain, she wears the armband but in any given game the eleven players that go out there all have a duty and a responsibility to lead."
“These are the types of characters and the culture that we want to create with a winning mentality and it is just great for the club going forward.”
Thomson was pleased with Rangers’ start to the domestic campaign with four wins from four in the SWPL Cup group stage.
He continued: “It is always important to start the season in a winning manner which we did and we had different tests throughout all the games.
“It is all about competition, we have an experienced group of players in there now given we have signed Tessel Middag, Jane Ross and Kayla McCoy. The pressure also comes from the fact that the youth players now are champing at the bit and are desperate to get in and compete for the places along with the rest of the group.”
Gers were due to kick-off their league season on Sunday, but the match has been postponed due to Coronavirus cases within the Partick Thistle squad. Thomson added: “It is disappointing the game has been cancelled but we have got to take into consideration that Coronavirus is still out there.
“The club have given us great direction in the fact that they take away all the anxieties and set the rules and we just adhere to them and follow them.”
