Two goals from Ritchie Maxwell’s side saw the Gers suffer a defeat in the league campaign.
The Light Blues continued their journey today as they travelled south to take on Ritchie Maxwell’s side in Dumfriesshire.
Three changes were made for today’s fixture, with Aaron Cervantes replacing Lewis Budinauckas in goals.
In front of him was a back four of Kane Ricthie-Hosler, Robbie Fraser, Greig Allen and Lewis MacKinnon.
Murray Miller, Charlie Lindsay and Charlie McCann were in the midfield, with Tony Weston, Juan Alegria and Ross McCausland up front for the young Gers.
Both teams started the match with intent straight from the referee’s first whistle, battling for possession all over the pitch, focussed on delivering the opening goal.
Dalbeattie created the first opportunity within the Rangers box, after Dan Orsi delivered a cross ball from the right and towards goal, but Aaron Cervantes made a fine jumping effort to collect.
On the 10th minute, Tony Weston played an excellent through ball from the middle of the Dalbeattie half to the on-running Juan Alegria. The Colombian narrowly missed out after Daryl Smith made a diving effort to take the ball from his before he could get a shot off.
Shortly after, Dean Brotherson whipped the ball from the right half into the B team’s box, where several Dalbeattie players failed to capitalise on the opportunity before the ball was safely cleared by Weston.
The youngsters responded quickly with Charlie Lindsay getting involved in some great build up play, after dancing around a number of defenders within the box. He chipped a dangerous looking ball to the back post, but no one was able to get on the end of the delivery.
In the 25th minute, Weston nearly found the back of the net for the Young Gers. Alegria and Weston linked up well to weave between the backline for the youngster to drive forward towards the front post. He fired a powerful low strike, but Smith was able to make the save.
Dalbeattie Star opened the scoring in the 27th minute, after Dylan Cairnie found space at the edge of the Gers box before firing a shot passed Cervantes who was unable to get a hand to it.
The Light Blues responded with Charlie McCann executing a powerful low shot within congested Dalbeattie box; however, it was deflected by a red shirt.
The Gers continued with this pressure, and they almost found the equaliser in the 37th minute. Robbie Fraser delivered a lovely corner to meet Lewis MacKinnon at the back post, where he managed to header the ball towards goal, but Jack Dickinson cleared it from the line. Weston found the recovered the ball from the clearance and took a strike, but he was unable to control his effort and it went over the crossbar.
Kane Ricthie-Hosler nearly sent the ball flying into the back of the net for the Gers just before half time. Fraser delivered a lovely ball to Weston after a great run towards goal. The striker headed it high and Ritchie-Hosler struck the ball with power, but Dickinson made a sensational save to clear it from the line, keeping his side with a slender lead going into the break.
The second half began with the youngsters pushing hard and looking for the equaliser. It wasn’t all one way traffic though, as both teams kept battling for possession.
On the 57th minute, Fraser nearly found the equaliser for the young Gers. The B team were awarded a free kick a close to the edge of the box after a foul on Alegria, Fraser fired a strong low ball past the wall towards the bottom left corner, but Smith did well to save the youngster’s effort.
Ross McCausland came close to finding the equaliser on 65th minute. The youngster made his way down the left side before he chipped a delightful effort over the keeper, but Dickinson made another great goal line clearance to deny the Gers a goal.
The referee awarded Dalbeattie a penalty in the 80th minute after an infringement in the box. Brotherson stood up to take the penalty and managed to slot it past Cervantes to double the home side’s lead.
