Megan Bell opened the scoring before a Kirsty Howat double, including a superb backheeled finish, set the Light Blues on their way as they led by three at the half time break. Eilidh Shore pulled one back for the visitors before a well-worked team move was finished off by Jodi McLeary on the volley as the Gers ran out convincing winners in Cumbernauld.
Malky Thomson made five changes to the Gers side from the team which played out a goalless draw against Glasgow City on Sunday afternoon, with several youth players coming into the starting lineup as Chelsea Cornet, Megan Bell, Jodi McLeary, Emma Watson and Kirsty Howat were named in the side.
Rangers started brightly and on the front foot from the off as full back Rachel McLauchlan was heavily involved down the right flank. Picking out Kirsty Howat in the area, the striker turned and fired a shot towards goal which was deflected behind.
The hosts continued to probe in the opening ten minutes, enjoying most of the possession as the Dons sat in their shape with the Light Blues pressing for an early breakthrough.
Despite dominating the ball for large parts of the opening 15 minutes of the match, the Gers looked for the opening goal.
That opener came just moments later as Rangers took a deserved lead in Cumbernauld. Jodi McLeary found herself in space down the right side deep in the Aberdeen penalty; cutting the ball back she picked out Megan Bell in the area who fired the ball into the far corner to put the Gers in front.
The home side looked to double their advantage but hadn’t created anything clear cut to add a second of the match as the game approached the half hour mark with away side struggling to put any stamp on the game in an attacking sense.
The Gers doubled their lead just after the 30th minute mark. McLauchlan found space inside the area similar to McLeary for the first, with the cut back finding Kirsty Howat this time who produced a brilliant backheel to turn the ball beyond Chloe Gover in the Aberdeen goal. Rangers certainly made the most of a dominant first half hour in Broadwood.
Nicola Docherty produced a great left footed cross which found McLeary inside the area. However, she could only turn her shot on her left side over the crossbar from close range.
Bell went close to adding her second on the night and Rangers’ third with a low drive from outside the area, but it fizzed just past the far post as the game entered the 40th minute mark.
Rangers got their third in the next phase of play as Emma Watson cut inside from the left in the final third and picked out Howat on the edge of the penalty area. The striker swivelled onto her right side as her shot found the bottom right corner to add her second of the night as the Gers took complete control heading into the break.
Rangers introduced Kirsty Maclean after the interval as they looked to add to their three goal first half advantage. Maintaining early spells of the ball, the home side looked to build on what they already had.
However, the away side got themselves on the scoresheet in what was their first effort on goal on the night. Eilidh Shore latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot which found the far corner.
Rangers responded to conceding in the best possible way with a brilliantly worked goal. Bell delivered an expert cross which found McLeary in the box, with the forward finishing well on the volley from close range to add a fourth on the night.
Thomson introduced another three from the substitutes bench as the Gers looked for more second half goals; the theme of the night with dominant possession continued, but the hosts hadn’t registered anything on goal since adding to their lead.
There was a special moment eight minutes from time as Jenna Ferguson made her debut for the club, replacing Hannah Davison at the heart of the defence with the Gers continuing to pose a threat as the match approached its conclusion.
The Gers seen the match out with comfort as they got back to winning ways in the league following their goalless draw with Glasgow City at the weekend.
