Match Report: Ross County 3-3 Rangers

RANGERS were held to a 3-3 draw by Ross County in the Scottish Premiership in Dingwall this afternoon.

Played in the eye of storm Malik with driving rain and gale-force winds, the Light Blues were ahead early-on through a debut goal from Amad, but County hit-back through Jordan White and Regan Charles-Cook to lead at the interval.

Gers then fought to take the lead through James Tavernier and then Connor Goldson, before in the sixth minute of seven added at the end, Matthew Wright found a leveller.

Manager Gio van Bronckhorst named four changes to his side - from the team which overcame Livingston in midweek, Amad was handed a debut, with Ryan Kent, the returning Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield also coming into the side. James Sands, Scott Wright, Alex Lowry and Fashion Jr made way for the foursome.

That means it was the same back five of Allan McGregor in goal with Tavernier, Goldson, Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic in front of him.

Aribo and Arfield joined Glen Kamara in the middle of the park, with Kent and Amad playing in support of Cedric Itten.

Each of Sands, Lowry, Wright and Fashion Jr made the bench next to Jon McLaughlin, Leon King, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe.

Gers began on top, and it took them just under five minutes to find a lead with Amad making it a dream debut.

Itten was felled in the middle of the park initially by Jordan Tillson, but the ball broke for Aribo to run into space. His low cross to the back post was measured perfectly for Amad to tap home from close range to send the enormous contingent of visiting supporters into raptures.

Itten had a half-chance soon after on the end of a Barisic delivery from the left, but he was crowded out by the home defence while Arfield was denied by Ash Maynard-Brewer at the goalkeeper’s front post at the end of a sweeping Gers counter.

But out of nowhere on 25 minutes, County were level. McGregor couldn’t hold onto Joseph Hungbo’s cross into the area, and Jordan White was there to tap home.

It then got worse on 29 minutes. Gers failed to clear a bouncing ball on the edge of their area, and in nipped Regan Charles-Cook to profit and slide the ball under McGregor for 2-1.

Maynard-Brewer showed good hands to hold onto a decent Kamara strike for Gers as they looked to hit back, before he also made a decent block from Tavernier as the visitors began to really move the ball with purpose around the home box.

Tavernier then found the roof of the net from a free-kick out on the outside corner of the box, while Maynard-Brewer again saved from Arfield from a powerful strike just inside the area.

A Maynard-Brewer save from Arfield with an effort from just outside the area was how the second half began before the Light Blues drew level on 49 minutes.

Amad had a great effort on goal from 20-yards on the curl which the goalkeeper couldn’t hold, and Kent was able to bravely dive in on the follow-up which spun up in the air and dropped for captain James Tavernier to smash home from close range.

It was exactly what Rangers needed, and backed by a fervent support at that end of the ground, they set up camp in and around the County box.

Itten should have netted on the end of a sensational Aribo run and cross into the area, while Amad had another effort deflected just wide.

The door was being banged and banged and banged, and on 73 minutes, finally, it caved in.

Barisic’s delivery into the area resulted in an almighty goalmouth scramble, with sub Roofe in the middle of it. The ball squirmed out for Arfield to again be denied by the goalkeeper, but following up to squeeze the ball over the line was Connor Goldson for his second of the season.

County hadn’t threatened at all in the second half, but they could have been level again when Keith Watson headed wide, while Roofe hit a post and, one-on-one, fellow replacement Fashion Jr was denied by the goalkeeper at the other end.

Then, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, County levelled matters. Gers just couldn’t clear their lines from a corner and Matthew Wright slid home at the back post for a share of the spoils.
