Manager Steven Gerrard made two changes to his side for this from the level first-leg – Joe Aribo came in for Ianis Hagi up top while Fil Helander made way for Leon Balogun in defence.
It was all Rangers in the opening minutes, with the Light Blues having plenty of possession and territory, while also playing at a real intensity to try and unpick the Slavia defence.
The first moment of danger, however, came from the visitors – Nicolae Stanciu’s cross made it to the six-yard box, but there with a fantastic clearance was Leon Balogun to get the ball up and over the crossbar.
Then on 14 minutes, Slavia hit the front. Jan Boril’s cross from the left was an excellent one, and rising to meet it and head home at the front post was
Gers responded well – Ryan Kent testing goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar with a super effort from 25-yards, Kolar getting down well to his right to save.
Alfredo Morelos then had his first sight of goal for the evening, heading over a Barisic cross from the left, before he tried his luck with a powerful drive from 25-yards which slipped just wide.
Into the second half, and again it was Rangers on the front foot. Glen Kamara dragged a shot just wide while Gerrard added Kemar Roofe to his attack on 55 minutes.
But Roofe’s night was to last just six minutes – he challenged goalkeeper Kolar for the ball on the edge of the area. The referee adjudged the striker to have caught the goalkeeper high and showed him a straight red card.
After a lengthy stoppage, the 10-men went again in search of the goal they required. Nathan Patterson showed good tenacity to burrow a way through from the right to flash a shot just over from the angle.
Then on 73 minutes came a further blow – Leon Balogun, who had been booked earlier in the evening, was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Lukas Masopust.
From that resulting free-kick, 25-yards from goal, Nicolae Stanciu stepped-up and curled the ball beyond Allan McGregor and into the back of the net.
That was to put the game beyond Rangers, and brought their participation in the tournament to a close.
