The winger said patience and hard work has been important for him in his first year at Rangers but now hopes he can show what he can bring on the pitch.
Speaking to the media this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s Viaplay Cup tie against Greenock Morton, Matondo said: “The manager has brought a lot of talent in and that is what happens at clubs like Rangers, we have got a lot of talent and a lot of competition but that's what you want. No footballer will sit and tell you they don't want to play football, of course, everyone wants to play football but sometimes you just have to wait for your opportunity, be patient and just keep grafting away, that is all I can do.
“It is down to me as well to be fit and to do everything in my power to convince the manager that I should be playing but ultimately like I said we have a lot of talent, so you have to take your opportunity when you get it and just go from there. The manager has been honest and open with me, we have a good relationship, it is down to me at the end of the day and the more I take my opportunities the more game time I can get.”
The 22-year-old came off the bench in last weekend’s Scottish Premiership match against Livingston and made a positive impact at Ibrox as Rangers ran out 4-0 winners at Ibrox.
He now hopes to build on that display as the squad head into another busy run of fixtures. Matondo continued: “I know the qualities I have, I know the qualities I can bring and show but it is down to me to stay fit and stay humble enough to take my opportunity when it does come.
“I know I haven't reached the levels I would've wanted to reach, or the levels people probably expected from me but that is football, it happens. I'm not stressed, I'm not panicking because I know what I can do, and I know how good I can be. I did all right last week so it is about building from that and making sure I can contribute and show everyone what I am about. Football is full of ups and downs, but I feel like I am in a good place right now.”
The Welsh international believes he can slot into Michael Beale’s team and can adapt to different challenges the squad will face this season. He added: “Every game brings its own challenges but with my attributes in terms of pace it doesn't mean I can only play when the game opens up a bit.
“I have been playing football from a young age so I have played against different types of opponents so for me I feel like I can contribute and add my qualities to the team whether we are playing an open game against an open team or against a packed defence. It is about me understanding my role a bit better and understanding the game a bit better and bringing my qualities to that.
“I feel like I can still play in the system the manager wants, of course I am a natural wide player but that doesn't mean I can't play inside the pitch, I can't play as one of the strikers or one of the ten's or something like that. I feel like with the qualities I have I can adapt to what the manager wants.”
