It was a tough start for the young Gers who lost the first game 3-0 to Rapid Vienna, but they bounced back to win their remaining two Group A matches.
A Ciaran Dickson goal was the difference in a 1-0 victory over Frankfurt, before an impressive performance saw them power to a 4-0 win over RB Leipzig. Dickson was again on the scoresheet, along with Zac Butterworth, Nathan Young-Coombes and Leon King.
The Gers will now face Stuttgart and Porto tomorrow morning in a bid a place in the second round of Groups.
The Gers kicked off the day with a tricky first match against Rapid Vienna. The Austrian side came out strong and had a few early chances, with Lewis Budinauckas making a couple of crucial saves in the first-half of the game to deny them an opener.
However, with seven minutes on the clock, Rapid Vienna got their goal before the break. Early in the second-half of the game Vienna managed to double their lead, and with just two seconds of the game remaining added a third in the dying stages.
It was a bright start for the Gers in their second game of the afternoon against Eintracht Frankfurt. With just two minutes on the clock, a long throw forward from goalkeeper Jay Hogarth bounced for Ciaran Dickson who took a touch to lob the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.
The Gers had chances to increase their advantage as Ross McCausland’s shot was saved by the keeper, before he also got a touch on the rebound to deny the Gers youngster a goal.
Frankfurt saw a second-half shot saved well by Jay Hogarth as they looked for a road back into the match.
With 30 seconds remaining Nathan Young-Coombes had an effort for the Gers as he was through on goal and beat the goalkeeper but his shot was cleared by a Frankfurt defender.
It was an impressive display from the young Gers as a dominant performance saw them beat RB Leipsig in the final game of Group A.
In a goalless first-half, Graeme Murty’s side had chances to take the lead as Ross McCausland’s chance was just wide of the target and Ciaran Dickson came close with an effort of his own.
Just seconds into the second-half the Gers got the break-through as Daniel Finlayson found Ciaran Dickson with a ball forward and he turned and flicked the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
The second goal came shortly after as Nathan Young-Coombes picked out Zac Butterworth with a free-kick and Butterworth fired a powerful shot into the back of the net.
It was a strong performance from the Gers who added a third with three minutes remaining as Murray Miller found Nathan Young-Coombes in the box.
Rangers rounded-off their scoring in style a minute later as Leon King drove forward before playing the ball out to Ross McCausland.
McCausland returned the ball to King who had continued his run, and the defender drilled a low beyond the keeper.
The Gers could’ve had a fifth as Ciaran Dickson’s shot was cleared off the line by a Leipzig player and Ben Williamson was denied with a chance.
