McCallum Delighted With Attacking Quality

DAVID MCCALLUM was delighted with the attacking quality on display from Rangers U19s in their 3-2 victory over Napoli in the UEFA Youth League.

After an encouraging second half display in defeat to Ajax last week, the Young Gers continued where they left off as goals from Mackenzie Strachan, Charlie Lindsay and Robbie Ure sealed all three points at Firhill.

Speaking to RangersTV at full-time, McCallum said: “I thought in the first half we were excellent. I thought 2-0 at half time was probably a little kind, we could have had one or two goals more. We hit the post a couple of times and had a couple of good opportunities.

“I thought we carried a constant threat. In the first half, Zak Lovelace, Robbie Ure - I thought Ross McCausland was more effective in the second half – all carried a threat. We always looked as if we could create and score.

“I’m really pleased that we got the result. It was closer than it needed to be. All credit to the lads, when it got a little bit nervy towards the end we still managed to see it through.”

After Napoli pulled a goal back in the second half, Rangers restored their two-goal advantage shortly after to underline their authority in the game.

McCallum continued: “Every aspect of what we did, the intensity without the ball when we tried to win it back, sets a tone – the front line did that.

“We had plans to go about getting regains, and I thought the lads followed that to a man. To win games of football it comes down to decision-making and quality and I thought for the large parts of the game we did that really, really well.

“Against Ajax we took 45 minutes to find our feet and believe that we should be there and be comfortable. The message today was about starting the game in the way that we finished against Ajax and I thought we did that.

“That was the only frustration in the first half, through the possession that we had and our performance, that we didn’t put the game completely to bed. We had to be a little more defensive-minded in the latter parts of the second half, but ultimately you’re up against a team who have a previous of becoming a little bit more involved as the game goes on.”
