The young Gers boss highlighted his delight in his team’s performance following a tough challenge against the league leaders this afternoon.
Speaking exclusively to RangersTV after today’s winning performance, McCallum outlined his delight with the squad’s defensive performance against the home side. He said: “We had to fight for our lives to defend today.
“I think all the games we’ve played this season, that’s the most that we’ve had to defend. We’re really pleased with our performance and defensive performance.
“The last five minutes of the first half we’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink. We had to defend as a result of Bonnyrigg pressing us high.
“We didn’t win every first ball, but we had to make sure that we covered the second one. That’s part of defending, you’re not going to get it easy all the time. We came into this programme to be challenged, and Bonnyrigg Rose are at the top of the league for a reason. They have been the best, up until this point, they’ve been winning their games comfortably and we’ve had to defend properly because of that.”
McCallum continued by highlighting the number of youngsters breaking into the B Team and expressed the importance that exposure is. He continued: “That’s a couple of youngsters starting to dip into the B Team now and hopefully they continue to do that.
“We never know when players are going to be ready to play in this environment, so we have to try and look at each individual moment. We felt that it was right to bring Zak [McKay] into the squad today and we had a couple of U18 players on the bench.”
The Head Coach looks ahead as the young Gers enter an exciting fixture list in the coming weeks, starting with Ayr United in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Tuesday night. He continued: “The next run of games coming up that are going to impact the rest of the season.
“The next few fixtures are going to be key to keep challenging the players.
“It's another exciting fixture [Ayr United] that we are looking forward to, a key part is to make sure that we recover properly ahead of that game. We will be respectful to Ayr United, they are a Championship team, it will be a tough game but that’s what we want and look forward to.
