McCallum Praises Performance

DAVID McCallum praised his sides second-half performance as they defeated Celtic 5-0 in the Scottish Youth Cup.

The Gers were were 1-0 up at half-time through a strike from Leon King, but McCallum said they upped their game in the second-half to comfortably progress to the third round.

He said: “We are naturally delighted obviously the result is great but more importantly we are through to the next round of the cup.

“Half-time was a little bit interesting because we didn’t think we performed as well as we should have in the first half if we are being honest.

“Probably the one bit of quality was Leon’s goal which was a terrific finish. I felt in the first-half we were a little bit sloppy in possession and taking too long to move the ball and not having enough movement in areas of the pitch which let us go and hurt them.

“Celtic tried to make it difficult for us but once we got it right in the second-half we moved better and we got our forward players in positions to hurt their back line and we created a lot of opportunities.

Second-half goals from  Nathan Young-Coombes, Ross McCausland, Kai Kennedy and Ciaran Dickson saw five different goalscorers for Rangers.

McCallum added: “It’s fantastic, the goals were great, and Kai’s one at the end we were talking about Leon’s but Kai scoring that one was equally as good.

“There’s not a lot we can say other than we are delighted, we are looking forward to the next round, we’ll enjoy tonight because I think the lads have earned that result today so a lot of credit to them.”
