After a quickfire first half double through Charlie Lindsay’s penalty and James Graham, the Light Blues found themselves in a commanding position at the half time break before going on to see the game out to claim another three points.
Speaking to RangersTV after the win, McCallum was happy with the way his side controlled the contest and remained defensively sound throughout: “Both halves felt a bit different. First half we had more control within the game and had one or two key moments where we could have done better to go further ahead, but I don’t think there was a lot of chances throughout the course of the game.
“Most of the game seemed to be played around about both boxes. The two goals settle you down, then we don’t need to chase the next goal but it is about trying to find the moments and take the opportunities if they come.
“We had one or two good opportunities throughout the course of the game but when you get to that point it is about becoming a bit more streetwise at times.
“Recognising that sometimes it is about controlling the game and taking the sting out of it at key moments, rather than allowing the game to become open and stretched, and I thought we did that quite well through the course of the game.”
The Gers coach has happy with the first half display as the home side put themselves in control with two quick goals after a close start in Dumbarton.
He continued: “First half I thought we had a lot of control, had good opportunities around about their box. We probably didn’t do good of the moments that we did have around it.
“Then we get the penalty kick that gets us on our way and then the second goal I think is excellent, it is something we spoke about this week about where we thought we could get a bit of success.
“We tweaked the way we configured the frontline so that we had different threats, we had James Graham in there and one of his biggest attributes is running and he gets his goal from that which we are really pleased about.”
McCallum highlighted the importance of a solid defensive display as the Gers saw the game out well in the second half and kept a clean sheet.
He added: “That is the important point, if you look at the second half we had to defend a lot of balls towards our box. The important thing was that if we didn’t win the first one then it is winning the second ball.
“I thought Budinauckas came and collected a few good crosses into the box, and I thought the defenders dealt with the crisis defensive moments well.
“We haven’t got the complete performance in terms of total control within the game, but what we have got is the importance of creating the moments where we got our goals and when we had to defend I thought the lads were excellent in that moment as well.”
