The young Gers hit the Jags for six without reply at the Rangers Training Centre, making it successive victories in this year’s competition.
Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, McCallum was pleased with his side’s display: “The Glasgow Cup is important to us, and we want to make sure that we go and win it.
“But to do that we need to go through the group stages first and foremost and, whatever these games end up being, we need to make sure we represent ourselves well.
“It’s been a few weeks since our last game just based on the international break. It was important tonight to get ourselves back into a rhythm of playing games again; the focus of the players who haven’t been on international duty has been really good.
“We continue to talk about it being their development stage and we maximise those training opportunities, but ultimately everyone wants to play games.
“The game was supposed to be on the grass, but with the weather changing so dramatically over the course of the last few hours we moved it to the astroturf.
“Naturally it changes the feel of the game slightly, but we challenged the players to make sure they respect themselves and reach a level that they expect, and I thought they did that really well tonight.”
Rangers were buoyed by a first B Team hat-trick for 16-year-old Josh Gentles, who capped off a fine week after netting a brace for the Under-18s in their Scottish Youth Cup triumph away to Fraserburgh.
McCallum believes the teenager’s goalscoring exploits is testament to his penalty box prowess, while the B Team head coach was delighted at his side’s energy from the off.
He added: “We want to dominate possession and have a purpose, and I thought that was something which was really evident tonight. We have scored the six goals, but we’ve created a number beyond that as well.
“We want to have possession and dominate the game, but we want to make sure we carry a threat. One of the things that we spoke about before the game was outworking before outplaying; we know that we can outplay, but if we bring a level of intensity then it sets a level that we want to get to.
“He [Gentles] has got that knack in and around the penalty area, and he finds himself in the right positions more often than not.
“But you need to have the ability and composure to finish it off, and he’s doing that.
“It’s a good moment for him just now with the B Team, but he has to keep doing it between the two squads.
“We’ll keep giving him opportunities when it allows, and it’s important that he’s taking them, but equally it’s important that the group put on a professional performance tonight.”
