The Light Blues were pegged back twice in the contest and had to play the majority of the second half with 10 men following a red card for defender Jack Harkness before substitute James Graham fired Gers to victory.
Speaking to RangersTV after the win the head coach was delighted with the character of his side and how they showed a different way to win against a tough opponent.
He said: “We knew it would be a competitive game, Stirling University are up where they are in the league and they had a lot of motivation today because they are still looking to be in that play-off spot to get promoted, so it was always going to be that way.
“I thought we started well and had good moments of control, created good chances, obviously going one up I thought we deserved it at that point, shortly thereafter we had opportunities to be a little bit more comfortable in terms of the scoreline, with what we created we weren't quite on the end of one or two moments.
“The goals that we have lost are a little bit frustrating, but we showed a lot of character in the second half and made it really interesting in terms of putting ourselves down to 10 men for different reasons and today, Jack Harkness has tried to get back in to a moment where he can defend the box and he has just clipped the lad at the last second, it is one of those things it happens and we had to deal with it and the boys did really well.
“I thought Ross McCausland did incredibly well at right-back in a defensive and he still carried some attacking momentum at key moments as well because we knew we would need to still have that, that was a bit of risk but certainly a risk that we thought was worth taking.”
The boss was full of praise for the match winner and says he thoroughly deserved to be the man who produced the games decisive moment after a difficult few weeks for the forward.
He added: “I think the three goals that we scored, Charlie Lindsay has been heavily involved in the first two, that is good sign of who we are and how we want to attack and carry an attacking threat, the last goal is a bit different, because at that point we are down to 10 men and we knew at times we had to hit them on the counter attack, because naturally you are a man down you have to give up some possession.
“It was an excellent goal from our goal kick, we have started we have gone through from Strachan to Ure, and really early he has given a shout to James who has got a real attacking threat in terms of his pace, an excellent touch from Robbie and James has gone through and scored.
“I think it is really important to mention James, he has had a tough couple of weeks with a family situation that is going on at the moment and I am incredibly proud of him in terms of how has dealt with that and has family should be as well. He has done so well to find himself in an attacking position, he missed the first with the keeper saving it but he got the rebound, so a lot of composure.
“I am so pleased to get the 3-2 win and I know the boys in the team will be the same that it is James that has gone on and scored the winner”.
