The young Gers’ manager spoke exclusively with RangersTV ahead of Tuesday nights home game against Civil Service Strollers. McCallum reflected on Saturday’s winning performance against East Stirlingshire which saw the Light Blues collect another three points and a clean sheet.
He said “I really enjoyed the game. I thought that the way it panned out was different challenges, which is important for the players to experience that.
“We created decent chances throughout the game, I’m a little disappointed to only be 1 - 0 up at half time but there’s credit to how we managed the game because it’s easy to get frustrated. What we’re looking for our players to do is to be able to adapt without us telling them what exactly is going on and for them to be able to deal with it.”
McCallum highlighted how well the young squad are managing to maintain a clean sheet throughout competitive senior matches, he added “I think we always speak about an attacking player because it’s natural but I think it is also important that we can defend.
“You look at the first team last season and how many clean sheets that they had and how that came about. We try and make the spaces tight and congested so that if there are second phases we can try and at least make it difficult for the opposition when they're on the attack as well. I have to say from a defensive point of view they did it really well.”
Looking ahead to Tuesday night, the B Team coach added how encouraging it is to have the supporters back in the stadium to cheer the squad on and the importance for them to be exposed to that environment, saying: “The fans have been excellent. They have turned up in numbers every game that we have played, it's great for the players to have fans behind and support them. We want that to increase as much as we possibly can we want to involve them in the game so we can continue to motivate them to come and watch us.”
